    Default Legality of shooting hawk

Wasn't sure where one could ask this. A hawk got into my chicken coop. Killed a couple of chickens. It's hanging around looking for the chickens bodys I got rid of.

If it attempts to kill more chickens can I blast it with my shot gun? I understand their protected birds but is that the case if their killing your livestock?

Probably not permitted to kill em. But you'd want to call Alberta environment or Alberta agriculture to find out for sure. My two minute google search was inconclusive.

They are closed. Tried already. From what I see it's a no... but then some places say you can protect your livestock. I'm not a farmer tho so wasn't sure if that made a difference.

Is your chicken coop in a place where it would be legal to use your shotgun for target practice? If yes, maybe?

If this is something you are set on doing I would

Not post about it on the internet

    Not call to ask questions

    Shoot, shovel, and shut up

Birds also sometimes die of natural causes.

I believe the key feature here is that you are not a farmer, so you are fuck
If you were a farmer, diff story.

On the other, other hand... You're a Status Indian, aren't you? I think that means (a lot of things that I deleted), but words to the effect of "do whatever the fuck you want".

if you do kill that hawk make sure you also kill its whole family and all their friends so there are no witnesses and no payback. Maybe kill the rest of your chickens too just in case.

Like eating a poisoned chicken carcass? Anticoagulant rodenticides are natural, right?

As I read your reply I saw the hawk was in the midst of a stare down with my one duck and had to go running out there. Thankfully the ducks are huge.

I'm not a farmer hence my hesitation on protecting livestock. And yes Im a status Indian. Didn't want to muddy the waters any further. Weirdly I can shoot a grizzly, a caribou, mountain goat etc etc but maybe not a hawk. Hate to say it but we don't all just blast away with no regard to the laws.

When it comes to hunting i apply for draws, I build my priority and can tell you the wait times in any wmu I hunt.

Owning a few birds does not constitute as livestock nor make you a farmer. If you live in City limits discharging firearms is an offense as well as killing a protected bird.

You can do as you please... but if you get caught it won't be good.

Birds of prey are specifically protected under both the Wildlife Act and the Agricultural Pests Act. There are no circumstances where shooting a hawk is legal, even if you are a farmer. I'm not 100% certain if/how Status would affect that but honestly I doubt it does, I think it only pertains to game birds.

I don't disagree. I was hopeful that maybe what I was reading online was wrong... and theres enough gun owners here that i thought maybe someone has dealt with this. Was hopeful that protecting your livestock from imminent death would be the one area you could blast the hawk. I also agree about the status part.. doesn't change things hence why I didn't mention it with the original post.

I always assumed it would be a fox or coyote I'd be dealing with but a damn hawk?? Ugh.

I'm surprised a hawk is treated in the same category as every other bird of prey. There's so fucking many of them!

Yeah the furry pests are a lot easier to deal with, flying ones are a whole different ball game. I'm going to conclude this is all your fault for raising such delicious chickens, maybe try raising gross-tasting ones next time.

Regulatory efficiency at work. Heck of a lot easier to put a blanket ban on killing BoP instead of expecting Joe Farmer to know the difference between a Swainson's hawk and a Ferruginous Hawk at 100 paces.

The Arnaud Amalric philosophy on pest control, I can dig it.
