He was my secret Santa the last time I did it. He called me to let me know what he planned to do but I never actually got anything and was left high and dry. But on the other hand I sold him some tools and he showed up when he said he was going to and paid what we agreed on so that was a good experience. So I've seen both sides of ol spikerS

I also saw the work in question first hand. It’s definitely not a case of “cant please everyone.” I wouldn’t let him build my fence, but I might trust him to cut the lawn.
I cant speak to what happened, don't know the story, I just know what he's done for me is solid. He built my fence and He's building my garage, passed inspection yesterday, so I dunno.

Anyone who isn't happy with the skills, speed, or communication of these "on the side" kind of dudes, which is what spikers is, since he has a real day job that pays real money, should go use a legitimate contractor who has insurance and a receptionist and hgih overhead.

    Doesn't guarantee better service unfortunately.

If you have a problem, If no one else can help and if you can find him. Maybe you can hire, spikerS.
You've now put that song in my head - people around me today are cursing you, I've been doing my own voicebox renditions of it for a bit now before posting.

I agree regarding the quote from Firebane - that's not a bad deal at all, I wouldn't have tried to negotiate anything other than a "ok, deal, where do I sign" on that estimate. Even without the 2 year warranty. If whoever provided that was 1/2 decent at his work...I wish I could use him for a couple similar jobs I have right now.

The only reason we looked elsewhere was because of finding someone perhaps more local.. we like to try and support the local small guys. There were 2 we looked at but one was CRAZY high and the other flaked.

Finding someone for a small job is 10x harder than finding someone for a large job, and those are flaky enough.

Also, you don't want a "carpenter", you want a handyman or something. Try community newsletters, kijiji etc.
    this is so true
and they prioritize the regulars just like them hoes they like a sure thing

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

The drama was never revealed except among the parties who were involved. Every now and then though its brought up and quietly goes away again with no telling of the story.

To be honest not sure why it really matters. Spikers always seemed to be one of the good dudes around here.

The details are scattered throughout beyond. I think that most people are just trying to be a "good guy" and not rake him over the coals.

Wasn't it that weird fence/bench seating thingy? It looked almost surreal.

No, it was a built in entertainment console. It was a job for a furniture maker / woodworker, not a carpenter / framer.

A wall unit. Now I feel compelled to share so others can behold the spectacle…

Wild, he took “built in” literal

Built ins should be built to size, but fully independent of the hole they’re going to live in, then just trimmed out to look seamless… not actually be built into the fucking drywall? Is that what’s happening?

There’s a lot happening, but strangely enough not cabinets sunk into the drywall haha.

Yeah, at no stage could that ever have been on the right track. Wow lol. Furniture building/finish millwork is1000 miles away from framing and rough carpentry, which he's always seemed pretty good at . I assume a lesson was learned here by both parties but costs should have only been incurred by one so hopefully refunds were made.
