Oh fuck yeah you’re gonna love that. I’ll probably add that one this year
I have the 2021 Orca and love it. It comes out on powder days. Floaty and quick in the trees.

I really liked the artwork on this year's version. Now need to find a pair of bindings for it...

Ahh very nice, you already know how much fun it is!

The ultras are really underrated. Some of the older years had better colours for your board but these would probably work

Had an interesting episode... did a few runs at Pano last week just after their 48cm dump. Lovely out there, with laps and laps of fluffy runs on the summit, though Taynton is far from ready.

On on the runs my kiddo and I were ripping it through the glades between roys and the outer limits, I biffed it hard... winding myself on a tree and feeling pretty wozzy. When I came to, I only had one ski on, and the other nowhere to be seen. Ends up my heel piece on my Marker griffins was about 20 feet above me, and all the bolts sheered right off.

With no brakes, that one Nordica enforcer took off and is probably still enjoying its journey in the jumbo area, leaving me to hobble down one one ski on cat trails that I had to traverse through schobers, sun bowl until I could get back on village way.

Anyways, long and short... new ski time.

Being that I spend most of my time at Pano, I'm likely going to go with a 'Eastern' rockies type of ski, and am thinking a more on-piste oriented ski with decent off characteristics will be the choice... I think it'll either be the Volkl Kendo 88s or the Blizzard Brahma 88s. I can't see myself wanting anything more narrow, being that I still have a pair of RC4 masters... and I likely will pick up a used pow setup and look for something >107 underfoot.

Even though you can get 'close' I don't think there really is a 1 ski quiver. Even my Nordica Enforcers were peformed well on-piste and a solid charger in crud, the 100 underfoot left me wanting more on big pow days, were too cumbersome in moguls and chattery on hardpack.

Its like bikes, but at least its cheaper :P

I wonder if the trend is still to buy those big huge 110+ skis like the trend was for the last decade? Seemed like every kid I saw was rocking fat Armadas, Bents, Faction... Totally great if you're freeriding and you need the forgiveness of soft tips/tails, but man its hard to watch these guys just skidding down the groomers, makes you wonder if they can actually ski.

In my opinion ski trend depends on your ski style and what you like to do. If you like carving then those narrow sub 100 skis are still your best bet as they are still the quickest and most responsive edge to edge. All those kids like to smear their turns which I'll admit to preferring as well on most conditions except when on hard pack corduroy, in those conditions there's nothing like a nice tight slalom turn on edge.

I slimmed down my quiver this year to 2 pairs of skis from 5. I have my 100mm Bents and my 120mm Bents. My 100mm Bents do almost everything for me now except for powder days where the 120s come out, they've also become my touring ski as well. If I was to start a quiver from scratch I would probably go with something like the new Blizzard Rustler 10 for a do all ski and then the 120s for those deep days but again i prefer that looser style of skiing.

I have switched from OG Pettitors to Reckoner 112s in the last couple years. I almost never need my Pettitors unless it’s the deepest days, let alone the Hellbents I’ve had for 11 years and skiied a total of 5 days on.

I bought a season's pass for a small mountain in the north of Spain a couple hours away that I had a few good pow days at last year.

This year, rain and green grass everywhere.

A friend is visiting this weekend to do a snowboarding trip. Trying to talk them into cancelling because of the deep freeze but not really sure what else there is to do in Calgary with it that cold. Anyone know if Sunshine or LL has a certain temp they close below or are they open no matter what?

The hill doesn't close. Occasionally one or two lifts will be closed or have maintenence issues.

Sometimes the Gondola will be delayed or worst case won’t run if it’s really cold at Sunshine.

Sunshine 100% closed in 2021 due to deep freeze (but also they blamed covid as couldnt put people inside to warm up). They also like to open late if its cold. Not sure about louise..

    id delay..

It's a moot point. Skiing/snowboarding in that weather fucking sucks.

It's not bad as it makes it much quieter, but ya, it can be horrible. I boarded at Castle when it was -50something with windchill as they had got a foot of snow (and website had said it was -20, the board at the chairlift told the whole story [-30 up top, plus castle wind]). Dont think there is a wax in the world to make that fun, we bailed after a couple runs. Could barely get down the cat tracks as glide was non-existent.

Hmm we'll have to agree to disagree. Some of my best days ever were <-20C and 25cm+ of snow. Usually I have a problem rejecting enough heat on powder days so the cold temps are nice if you're working hard. Especially touring.
