I'm not the target market here, but can someone explain to me why a chunk of nicely finished oak is worth $300? Some wood cutting boards that have actual woodworking involved (e.g., using multiple types of wood to make patterns), I get it. But those Boos ones seem like a waste of money.
How cheap do think a big chunk of hand finished in North America hardwood should be?

I have a big 1.5” thick maple one and it’s great, can’t say I extensively cross shopped it but I like it a lot better than the compound henkles one I use for cutting limes in my bar?

I think it’s highly subjective, but $300 doesn’t seem outlandish? Especially in 2023. Doesn’t take a lot of materials and labour to get to those prices imo

Yeah, some cutting boards are marketed like "luxury" items, and that is hilarious to me. Although, a good big thick cutting board is nice to have around. I could use a larger one with the drip groove, but I ain't paying that fancy money for one.
I'll make you one with my chain saw. 295$

This $20 bamboo one from Ikea has done the job for the last decade. The fancy ones are just like red knobs.

Exactly what I was talking about. $900 for this one ( https://chopd.ca/collections/end-gra...-x-13-75-x-1-5 ) is way better value than $300 for the plain Boos one IMO. And I would argue if a person can't justify $900 on something special like this, they probably shouldn't be spending $300 on the plain jane one either. But who am I to say [insert Kermit sipping tea meme].

Probably, but I have no issue spending a half hour sharpening knives every few months.

Agree, bamboo is harder than the "hardwood" stuff commonly used in the high end boards. Makes it durable. But harder on the knives. Remember when glass cutting boards were fashionable? hahaha.

To be fair that $300 board is pretty beefy, 24x18x1.75

Boos is the tits. I got this guy, its way overkill but there's no going back.

Edit: I actually need one for the new place, does anywhere in the city sell Boos blocks?

My basic knowledge is that end-grain will help retain sharpness vs these other wood options since you're cutting with the grain vs. against the grain, technically.

All that said I have a cheap wood board from Winners that we oil once a year with a rim for catching meat juices, and a couple plastic ones for tossing in the dishwasher and replacing every couple years.

Cal Don Sharpening. Great work and fast turnaround. Stays sharp unlike when I do it.

$300 for maple in edge grain (!) is highway robbery. That's about $20 worth of wood and in a production environment, maybe two hours of labour. Call it $100 production cost, they are raking it in at that price point.

For $50 in-store you can get an end-grain teak board that's far better than the Boos unit.

I'll throw this out there if anyone is in the market. I build custom cutting boards as a side hobby. Most of mine are predominantly walnut but I work with maple and exotics as well. Most 12" x 18" edge grain boards I build are $130.

Any suggestions of good Christmas gives involving alcohol?

Last year I got my brother the Costco Johnie Walker scotch taster pack and then he found some individual 1oz scotch cans as stocking stuffers. Wondering if there’s anything else like that?

Yeah kind of torn, but I liked the shorter length and the new Forge 6.0 batteries won me over.
