You’re only seeing them because it’s the popular thing to talk about this week. For whatever reason they sent it as an emergency alert, probably because it was -45c in Edmonton and now everyone found the aeso website. Every deep freeze, every heat wave, we have these alerts that nobody knows about, unless you’re listening to cbc radio lol. They’re literally just warnings so that if they have to get to the point of rolling blackouts, you're aware of it. AFAIK none have ever gone to an actual blackout. It’s always shit going down unexpectedly and we’re close to the edge in the extremes of weather.

Everyone’s a power engineer this week and it’s awesome and hilarious haha.
Yeah. Though we actually more often have surplus notifications that shortages.

    Grid alerts for shortages:
    Aug 28th, Aug 29th, Jan 12th, 13th, 14th

    Grid alerts for supply surplus:
    Aug 2nd, Oct 4th, Oct 6th, Oct 20th, Dec 21 (x2), Dec 23 (x2)

The emergency wasn't a shortage of power, it was having to pay premium prices from our neighbours. Financial Emergency We were sending our BC power to Montana at the start of the 'emergency'.

I'm not pretending to be an expert, but finding out we've been averaging 5 alerts a year for the last two decades was slightly disconcerting. If I found out my favored airline had 5 near misses a year I would no longer fly with them, but I can't choose a different power generating corporation.

What we really need to do during these alerts is melt the grid down... Turn on every power consuming object you can so either the system does have issues or we know it is all bullshit. Either way, showing the man with action we need more power coming from realistic sources is a good goal rather than robbing what little power we have to electrify all cars in the country when we are unable to back it up.

We did have rolling black outs in summer 2012. It’s the only time I remember.

Process Technician. Myself and the guys I work with never call ourselves power engineers. I think most of us are in the O&G field and not power generation field. The whole thing is kind of stupid but one little kettle and the ABSA gatekeepers/old boys club needs to step in and get their pound of flesh.

Again, these alerts are very early warning signs we're getting close to capacity based on estimates. It's really nothing for end users. AFAIK when it comes down to it and they need to do rolling blackouts, they turn off certain commercial customers first, so residential will never even notice it. And even then it's 30 mins of outage. It's nothing like Texas where half the state lose power for days.

Maybe one of the Texans I don't like will slip and fall. And get impaled by some rebar.

People didn’t seriously considering to or changing their usage because of that stupid alert?

    Did they?
My wife turned off a few LED lights...and waited a bit to finish some laundry.

I went downstairs, turned on another TV and watched a hockey game.

I stopped charging one of my cars. It took 2 seconds to open the app and press a button.

I didn't do anything to save power. I wanna watch the world burn.

Next time i'll turn on garage heat and the dryer at the same time. I'm an animal.
