There was literally no downside to taking small steps to temporarily reduce your usage, and potential benefit if it lowered the chance of blackouts.

I left the football game on, but turned off a few lights and a fan I had running. Didn't hurt me.

I elected to air-dry some shop clothes instead of running the dryer, doesn't seem like the end of the world to me. I get we're all staunch contrarians here but it's a pretty minimal amount of effort.
I turned down (not off) the 5kW heater in my garage which prolly meant it didn't kick back on for the few hours it took them to straighten shit out.

    Normalizing it is a downside.

Beyond logic: Normalizing people taking minor steps to help out in an emergency is a bad thing.

I get we're a libertarian circlejerk these days, but come on. If this was happening every day I could see the complaint, fine. For now, keep your pants on, don't hoard toilet paper.

My logic is why there was an emergency to begin with? Why aren't these very profitable companies making sure they can keep the lights on in the worst of conditions, because power conditions are only going to get significantly worse in the next decade. I don't want to start seeing them become dependent on consumers turning off 50 watts worth of electricity rather than ensuring the capability is there to begin with, just because it's more profitable that way. Utilities should always be prepared for worst case scenarios, because it's not like this is the first time we've had extreme cold temps, or extreme hot in the summer.

The utilities have no incentive to act differently. Our market provides different incentives.

You’re only seeing them because it’s the popular thing to talk about this week. For whatever reason they sent it as an emergency alert, probably because it was -45c in Edmonton and now everyone found the aeso website. Every deep freeze, every heat wave, we have these alerts that nobody knows about, unless you’re listening to cbc radio lol. They’re literally just warnings so that if they have to get to the point of rolling blackouts, you're aware of it. AFAIK none have ever gone to an actual blackout. It’s always shit going down unexpectedly and we’re close to the edge in the extremes of weather.

Everyone’s a power engineer this week and it’s awesome and hilarious haha.
