Do you seriously still not understand how property tax works? I don't think you are alone in this, seems to be an issue twice a year on this forum. handsinair.gif
I've officially given up on trying to inform people on here about property taxes. Good luck to you sir.

My assessment is up 5.5%, which I think means I'm winning vs the average, so my tax increase will be lower than most. It also means the property is valued significantly lower than the average in Calgary now though. Not really an issue because we're not moving anytime soon, if ever.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

According to the CBC, average house price is $610K and average increase is 10%.

That means my taxes are going up. Where is @Sugarphreak talking about changing property taxe payment values based on income?!?!?! much more fair.

I'm getting penalized because Jyoti thinks I have a nice house.

If my math is math-ing, I think I'm up ~5% assessed value as well.

@benyl we already have enough income-based taxes, thank you very much.

That is one way to do it.

I don't support the idea of taxing an asset. We don't tax people on the value of their rsp pension, savings accounts, cars, or expensive comic book collections. Why are we taxing people on the value of a house... if somebody wants to spend their money on a nice house instead of other things, they shouldn't have to pay tax on it.

So it could be taxed based on income, but an more fair way is a flat tax based on the number of occupants.

4 people are going to use the same amount of city services like garbage disposal, water and sewer infrastructure whether they are in an expensive house or a cheap one. We should all pay an equal share.

I do complain less now because I have a cheap house (relative to other houses in Vancouver) and my taxes are like 1200$ a year after the homeowner grant, haha. If you can't beat em... join em.

Equal share sounds socialist, but it means that poor people need to pull their weight... haha

I don't think the Calgary is going to wash out of me that quickly!

This would be a very ineffective wealth redistribution tool, which is why we'll never see it

I’d rather see toll roads that target all satellite communities, with exceptions for Calgary residents

Why not charge them less. After all it's more efficient for the city to get four people's garbage at once than single home incels.

Can anyone ballpark how much each increase of $10,000 equates to as a yearly increase?

    Bedroom?

    No that’s my wife’s closet.

You are from the province of hiding 6 kids in the bathroom of a motor home to save $50 at the ferry. You should know better.

There isn't really a set $ amount until June. But basically everyone's property taxes have gone up 7.8% this month. Then in June they'll recalculate your portion related to others. Since assessments have gone up 10% you can see if your home went up more or less than 10%. If you went up more than you'll owe even more than the 7.8% rise; if you went up less than 10% then you'll owe a bit less than the 7.8% increase.

One good thing (for house owners) is that the condo / townhouse market has finally been growing faster than detached homes which means they'll see a larger chunk of the pie increase this time around. Though sucks for the condo owners.

    Thanks.

Wondering if it's worth trying to get it reassessed or not. Like if the value changed from $725->$785 and I feel it should be $740, is it worth fighting over if it's like $75/yr difference in property taxes.
