Default VW Passat 2018 - Won't jump start

    Hi ,

I have a 2018 VW passat . After the deep freeze from the weekend, my car doesn't start. I tried jump starting it with no luck.
is there anything else I can try to do before towing to a mechanic?
the model does not have a block heater too.

The battery is probably frozen, I’d remove it and bring it inside for a 48 hour thaw.

    ^What he said.

If the battery is completely frozen, jump start won’t work. It could be completely toast if it’s an old one but I would bringing it inside, letting it thaw and maybe connect a trickle charger while you’re at it and then they again. Wait for it to get a bit warmer so the oil and fluids in the car thaw a little bit too.

I'd go a step further. Remove battery and go to Costco, get another one. Close to same dimensions and posts need to be in the same spot. Top or side. Probably top.

When you try to start the engine, does the engine turn over (crank) and not start. Or you turn the key to start and nothing happens?

The amount of batteries we've sold this week for vehicles is amazing. Bring on more cold

Busiest section at Costco when it's this cold. No joke.

I just wish there was any potential method of avoiding this or reducing your possibility of it happening. Alas, we are at the whim of the fates.

    Battery blankets? Are they effective?

I mean you can buy a pretty damn cheap battery tester from Canadian Tire for like $50 which will give you a basic health check of your battery. I get you are all preachy about battery maintainers but not everyone has the accessibility for that so some just suffer.

But people also think batteries last forever and then they are surprised when it dies or freezes. Same thing as coolant.

If you tried jumping a frozen battery, you might now need to replace a fuse before it will start again with a thawed/new battery

Seriously for less than $10 at princess auto a battery maintainer will do wonders. I just let my car sit outside for 2 weeks without touching it, with my $7 maintainer on the whole time and it fired right up today and thats with an already weak battery.

How does a battery maintainer keep a battery from freezing? Moving electrons make the freezing point different?

A fully charged battery freezes at a VERY DIFFERENT temperature than a partly discharged battery. and in cold weather, trust me, your battery is partly discharged when you park, and it discharges MORE while it sits.

So in short, yes. A battery on a functioning maintainer WILL NOT freeze.

So what your saying is, I should plug in both my battery charger and my block heater and my car should be unstoppable

Thing is BMWs don't have block heaters, plugging in the trickle charger to keep the battery from dying is the only thing we can do. There are pan heaters, but I've never really looked into it much.

When you buy a new BMW, they usually tell you to leave a trickle charger on the battery when not being driven due to how much tech they have in them. I find it good practice on all my vehicles for the last few years for sure.

BMW just assumes you are parking their car in a heated garage.

I have seen "terminal 30 shut off due to top startability limit reached" many times over the last few days. Aka, dead battery.

So no dip stick or block heater.. I might need to reassess the want for a 340i
