I witnessed a buddies meth'd out Civic back in the day after being recovered and it was openly discussed with the insurance guy how to make the vehicle just go away.
Shit should have been crushed on the spot.
The problem is keyless start and various security flaws on modern vehicles that makes it easy to grab. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I remember the club days before immobilizer was a thing when theft was just as rampant or worse. Immobilizer basically ended car theft but keyless start and smarter thieves are making it tick up again.
This is US data but I assume Canada won't diverge much from this.
All Toyotas are vulnerable up to brand new release like new RX, TX, or Grand Highlander.

Which is funny because there's multiple options for very simple fixes. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
One is keys go to sleep if they're sitting without moving after a set amount of time. Really cheap to implement with hardware inside the key nowadays. The other is Tesla has added a pincode to the touch screens as a secondary security method which is easy enough for other cars to update and add.
Yea I’m pretty shocked a PIN code hasn’t become more prevalent.
I guess old people might revolt, but you would think insurance companies might pseudo mandate it with premium reductions.

The Toyota attack isn't even relay based. It's CAN bus via headlight wiring. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
IGLA install is all the rage now in Ontario.

Manufacturers need to adopt this.

Yeah that's more of a brand specific issue though. Most of the other thefts are still relay based attacks. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Dodge/RAM are also can bus attack. $5 BT dongle and an Android 10 phone will program you a key. But you need access to the cab, unlike Toyota. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Any mode to by pass the pin can potentially serve the thieves as well. May be that's why they are reluctant to implement it.

At least I managed to trick the dude into going to an open spot to seize my vehicle, sans 1500.00 and additional damage to the body.
The law is bizarre when it comes to vehicle theft. That CBC piece in regards to organised criminals stealing vehicles, then shipping them across the Atlantic to places like Dubai is insane. It makes one wonder why are the powers that be not drafting laws to stop this type of thing. At least in my case, I know of a business who can fix my vehicle for $5000. There poor ppl are out $80,000.

P.S: 440i has manual transmission option, does that count as a theft deterrent to these zoomer thieves?

They're stealing SUVs and trucks, those don't have the option of a manual. I'd probably rig up a fuel pump relay kill switch.....or just don't live in Toronto. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Both can have options for manuals but they are usually optioned as an automatic because general people aren't interested in driving manuals anymore. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Just saying, an exploding stolen truck hidden in a container at the Montreal port or on a ship will change the auto theft industry instantly. Don’t they at least have a bait vehicle program in Toronto?
Or tell the cops you know the location of your stolen SUV and you want all your cocaine and ‘military assault style’ guns back. Last option is describing the box of fresh doughnuts in the truck.

Cops are lazy, they just say it's CN's problem as soon as it's on their property. And CN has nothing to gain from cracking down, they make money on all those shipping containers legal or not. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Police aren't supported by the courts.
They also say it's CN's problem BECAUSE ITS CN jurisdiction.
