They also think $1.2m R-CG fourplex condos will magically make housing affordable too.

They're all convinced it's some Ultra-Conservative conspiracy theory to build a mailing list to take over the municipalities.

What a time to be alive. Somehow when someone is upset and they take action, it's either noble or throwing a hissy fit (depending on the side of the fence you're on). Then if someone bitches about something and doesn't do anything, they're lazy.

There is a 4-unit rowhouse that finished up a couple blocks over from us. Walked by it the other day and noticed it's actually an 8-unit place with basement suites. We're taking bets on the cost of each, I'm guessing 600K for the townhouse and 325K for the basement. Affordable as hell eh (given the average Redditor's income of $18.50/hr).

with 8 units you may as well make it a condo and have the 4 basements rental properties that provide income to handle upkeep of the rest of the building.

No Redditor is going to want to live in a basement.

I think Reddit is proclaiming average household income of $82k/yr for their push at advertising… so that’s like, $19.71/hr… or even $21/hr as the public sector does 37.5hr weeks

I'm wondering why anyone would bother with a recall vote, just ask Rick McIver to kick out Calgary's council without any due process or evidence. Just like he extrajudicially removed Chestermere Council.

I wonder who will advertise in r/Antiwork? Average household income there must be negative $25,000 after deducting Government handouts.

I don't have a horse in the race but wasn't the whole point of kicking them out because they were trying to go through an investigation and the mayor + certain council members were actively stonewalling it and ignoring requests for like half a year? And even that didn't happen until they found a bunch of sketchy shit with the mayors spending and who they were awarding contracts through? I'd have to find the articles again but when it happened it was all over every news outlet and none of them painted Chestermere council in very good light, even the news sources that typically shit on the UCP.

Precisely, there was an entire mountain of evidence there. There is quite a bit that's not published in the news media but if you go through the history of the local paper you get a pretty good understanding of what was going on out there.

Good point. All of my family is in the Hat and I've been meaning to ask them what actually happened. Reading the articles they basically took away any power she had as a mayor, shes not allowed to vote, not allowed to talk to the city manager, not allowed to act in an official capacity as a mayor because she treated the city manager in a disrespectful way? She still gets half pay though. Must have dipped into that meth over at the Train and the Tank across the street.

I think Calgary's council is filled with just as many idiots so theres no way Gondek would be kicked out or even have her roll reduced (besides being barred from negotiations on the arena).

The news said that the city has hired something like 12 people to validate the results of the recall petition.

If it didn't meet the minimum then there's nothing to validate because it didn't meet the minimum.

So did it meet the minimum, or is the City just pissing away tax dollars as usual?

well, you count the lines first of all, but I think they need to attempt to verify each line in any event. Look for duplicate and invalid entries.

I have no doubt 12 people will spend a month on this. It's not a trivial task.

"Dear City of Calgary, here is the new BMW you ordered."

"Umm, that's clearly a used Mazda 3; but, I'll pay 12 mechanics for 1 month to study and quantify all the ways that it's not a new BMW."

If they didn't verify the amount of signatures and just said "Nah, take our word for it, there's not enough", how well would that go over?

I'm sure there's more people hired than needed, but they still need it done.

Yeah, this is a serious undertaking, and I'm happy the city is taking it seriously. I hope they release the following at a minimum:
    Number of lines (gross entries)
    Number of duplicates
    Number illegible
    Number ineligible
    Number accepted and eligible.
