Default help me pick a JDM lifestyle mover

I has me a truck and a Jeep already, but none that sits more than 5.

Because of 2 dogs, in-laws and a new kiddo on the way, I'd like a 7 seater that isn't a Suburban or a Dodge minivan, NOR am I interested in crazy priced new vehicles with insane interest rates, NOR ridiculously priced in the used market thanks to excessive exports.

Doesn't leave me alot of options, and I am also very much a 'lifestyle' person...

Over the years, I've learned that my lifestyle defines me far more than my material possessions, and while I'm not a vegan hobo, getting older, I value reliability over all attributes. IF I had my choice, I'd probably restart with a fleet of Toyota/Hondas with Landcruiser, Taco, Highlander and a Element.

Being in the need to be able to haul up to 7 people(3 - under 10 year olds, a MIL, a spouce) and 2 dogs to go skiing, hockey practice, back forth from Radium, biking etc.. and in a cost effective/efficient way.

I am leaning towards a RHD people mover... likely in the form of a RB2 chassis Odyssey with AWD and the K24a motor thats in the absolute.

This has been ages since I've owend/driven a Honda, but from what I understand, the K series is a bigger and more evolved version of a B series motor and ALL of them should be rock solid reliable. This one in particular as either the K24a/a8 are used in CRVs and TSX (the 200hp one)

This RB2 however, in AWD I am more concerned about finding more driveline parts than motors/transmissions, as those seem to be the easiest sourcable. But I think that is just part for the course when you're looking at +15 year old vehicles.

When I called out a couple JDM importers around BC and here, it seems like this is one heck of a popular model, as basically it seems to me like its a Civic Wagon or TSX Wagon

I am also interested in what is called the Stepwgn... which based on what I can tell, is very much a Honda Element with an extra row. Its very low on HP (160) for the curb weight, but all of these cars with the K motors seem to avg like 7x L/100 on the highway.

But before I make any decision, I'd love to learn experiences and even hear any recommendations.

I like the fact that the Odyssey is basically a wagon/minivan without looking or driving like one... while the fuel economy and reliability 'seemingly' is outstanding. The styling in the 3rd gen, even the 2nd is still very appealing.

First of all, I'm not good at appreciating the novelty of RHD cars at the best of times, but selecting one specifically to haul an entire family full of distractions seems like an unsafe choice when one considers the difficulty and complexity of safe turns.

Secondly, saying you are "very much a Lifestyle person" is saying something very specific that I don't think you intend to say...

So you want an odyssey. Why JDM? Is that the lifestyle part? I don't think I understand what that part means.

If you're set on an RHD, check out the Honda Elysion also, that's what I'd have if the wife would drive a RHD daily. As it is, we have an RL5 Odyssey and for all it's ancient...it's fucking solid, even with the J35...an engine I've never been a fan of

The K-series unit will outlast the rest of the car and is probably the easiest Honda motor I've worked on

I cannot advocate JDM in Canada, with a need for 7, in Canada, for a family.

I hate to break it to you but a Sequoia is what you're after whether you like it or not.

What about a Toyota Alphard? It certainly can fit 7 people.

Bravo if you can swing both. Personally, I just want the van. I don't have the endurance for parties anymore.

@r3ccOs , there's a really sweet JDM minivan by my kids daycare. I'll have to drive by it again to see what it is. @pheoxs might know, it's close to him.

+1 for having no idea what a "lifestyle" person is. Where I am from thats what old people would refer to as "the gays". @SKR can verify if they still do that in the hat.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I would not recommend a older RHD vehicle in your current situation.

You have a kid on the way and elders (in laws). You and your lifestyle are not important anymore. Your family is.
Safety tech has come a long way. After I got out of my 2002 Zonda CRV and into a new one, I noticed small things that made a massive difference in terms of safety. The ergonomics of the seats, headrest + neck position, driver seating angle are totally different. It feels more like a cockpit. The car has automatic braking(saved my stupid ass a few times), lane assist (helps in bad weather sometimes) and the brakes are waaaay better. The traction control and AWD system is better managed on ice, and more airbags.

The jump in safety technology you can see from 2015, then 2019 and 2021. I defo feel the difference coming from a 2002 vehicle. When me and my two ex gf talked about long term stuff or we went on test drives. I would make them sit in the driver side. They asked why. I said its a newer vehicle. You, parents and if we have kids are the important ones. So she has to be ok with the size. I talked about this with my last ex. We agreed we would get rid of her Jeep and have my new Zonda as the main vehicle because of new safety technology. We are finally in a place in our lives when we are not driving old shitty used vehicles.

If you are rear ended (I have been 3 times) or T-boned, your lifestyle don't mean shit. The first thing in your mind is, is the baby and family ok.

Toyota 4Runner or Honda Pilot. Come join the club...
