For 2 years of my training I spent time in various locations across the USA, driving in my VW Jetta from place to place for the most part. Spent a lot of time on the highways, slept in the backseat in truck stops from time to time, etc. It was fun, and I got a little sense of what each area was like, as over the 2 years I'd often go through the same areas.

    My brief notes:
I lived in NYC for 1 year. Never again. No way.
Lived in Chicago for 6 months. Nice place. Just don't take a wrong turn if travelling through south part of Chicago. Ended up in a place that looked like 3rd world. Would need to carry an ak47 at all times to be safe.
Lived in Shreveport for 4 months. Nice people. Nice weather. Liked the vibe.
Interviewed at some places in Maine, very nice! Felt like Canada. People very friendly.
Interviewed at some places in Michigan. Hospitals had valet. Baller. But on the otherside of the hospital property it was like third world conditions. Streets looked bombed out. Nope.
Visited classmate of mine in Dallas a bunch of times. I loved it. I'd live there.

I like the Greater Houston area, I'd love to orchestrate a move down there

There's an outside chance of Greenville, SC being somewhere for me in the semi-distant future after a promising meeting with an engineering manager about a facility coming in the next couple of years my skillset would be ideal for

Man so true, Michigan is a real have/have not place and it can vary from block to block...Jackson had some cool places but fucked up shit too

I couldn't live in NYC, even on a high salary...too many people and crazies. They go on about the culture, but Broadway isn't my thing and I'm definitely not a "foodie" so what else is there to do other than walk down the piss-soaked streets and look at abandoned cars and rats?

Upstate NY is OK I suppose

Long Beach/Carson/Torrance area was neat, but fuck me the cost of everything and the commute times, my hotel was 8 miles from site and it took me over 45 mins to get there. A little bit close to Compton though, seen so many street signs that I'd only seen in Dr Dre videos

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

I've always thought Rhode Island would be nice, but never been. Dont know why, bit always been interested. Also, if I was moving somewhere in the states, bet believe the weather would be warmer than any of the northern states. No love for Nevada? Being close to Vegas, but far enough away to be Insulated, would be cool. Nice and dry there

My sister is in Henderson Nevada and has been for about 10 years. I'd move there if I could.

If I were in your shoes I wouldn't hesitate to move to the US. I don't see things getting any better in Canada anytime soon.

I have hopes for Canada....also, little afraid of the draft if we moved. Also, the unknown. Afraid of that a bit.

if I wasn't pressed for work id move to Kalispell or the outskirts. Lots of lakes around and a quick 5.5hr drive to Calgary visit my folks.

Curious why Nashville over elsewhere in TN? I haven't been, but it strikes me as a great place to visit, yet awful place to live.
Haven't explored TN much to be fair - there are likely other great cities, too.

The trouble with America is that there's so many Americans in it. The parts of the country that I'd like to live in, based purely on terrain, would be filled with people who fetishize high school football, wear camo clothing regularly, listen to country music, drink light beer exclusively and manage to somehow get drunk off of 5 of them, have Browning logos on their truck's back windows and have that stupid fuckin Rod Farva haircut they all have. And tornadoes.
