Default Help - UGREEN Docking station - not charging MS Surface laptop

Hey, so I mostly think this is a problem with the stupid MS surface my wife uses for work, but here goes:
    1) bought a ugreen dual HDMI docking station for my office, but tested it at home, and it worked, and just going on memory, but I swear it worked with my wife MS surface as well (including charging, but I can't be sure I'm remembering this correctly.
    2) bought a 2nd Ugreen docking station to use at home, has "100W pass through", and connects fine to wifes MS surface, displays both monitors fine, but is NOT charging that MS surface machine. Have a 65W charger putting power into the dock.
    3) her MS surface charges just fine on USB C lenovo power cord, so that port will accept power.

Thoughts? Do I need a higher wattage power source, is the MS surface just not recognizing this dock as a charge source? Do I have a bad dock?

Naturally my wife started messing around with this as I was on my way out the door, so I didn't have time to do any real diagnostic work.

    Next steps?

    Never too much wattage.

One of my HP laptops on W11 actually gives a notification saying that the source is not supplying enough power.

Yeah, this device has in the past shown that notification, and that's NOT happening here. I'm using a 65W power supply at work with the similar dock and my Lenovo laptop, and that works flawlessly, but maybe the other model is less efficient, or something.
I don't actually own a higher wattage charger, but maybe this is the excuse I need to buy one?

Personal Dell and Work Lenovo have no problem with my 65W supplying passthrough dock. Only the HP hates it.

    No surfaces in this household

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the MS Surface, but my wife has no flexibility in her work device.

Double checked it this evening, swapping for the smaller ugreen dock, and everything functions as desired. I wanted this larger dock for the extra ports. Maybe those extra ports eat enough power that it needs more power input? That's frustrating if true. I mean, I can send this one back, or just buy a higher power charger, both are options.

Anything else I need to check before choosing one of those?

Did you try turning it off and back on again?

which Ugreen docking station did you get.
got curious and checked on Amazon some of the bigger ones and most state:

100W Power Delivery: Supports up to 85W USB-C pass-through charging via USB-C PD port, reserves 15W for other interface operation
so 65W is definitely not cutting it.

The smaller one is model CM498. The larger one is model CM639.

Yeah that bigger one must use more power internally and is passing less onwards.

Bigger power supply is a fun purchase anyway, probably do that.

So, little update. Bought a higher wattage power supply, figured that was handy to have in any event. I happen to already own a USB-C to USB-C cable that is rated for 100W AND has a display feature showing watts in real time.
On the new 100W per port rated power supply with the 100W rated cable, and the smaller Ugreen CM498 dock, it was showing 34w actual power going into the dock, and the laptop status showed it was charging while driving 2 HDMI monitors. Good enough.
On the larger Ugreen model CM639, with the same setup, the cable supplying power to the dock did not illuminate, indicating that NO power was being drawn (and this cable will show decimal watts down to 0.3W, so it's less than that).

Conclusion, this Ugreen Model CM639 dock was not accepting any power input, and therefore must be faulty. I have sent it back to amazon for a refund.

On a side note, I hadn't thought about it, but through all this I have found out that these docks all work without a power source, they'll just pull power from the laptop. Handy to know, although that's not how I want to use it obviously.

Now to decide which dual HDMI dock I want to buy next. Might order the exact same model and see if the next one works, might go with a different brand. y'all know I'm cheap as hell, so keeping it under $100 is a goal.

Received the WAVLINK docking station. Power pass-through is functional. All working well.
