Strip his sponsorship and get him a custom Mar v3.0 user title
Was that a Mar'ing though? I mean I stated from the beginning I was partial to Apple but just didn't want to commit without thoughts from the group, and nothing really talked me out of it. I did seriously ponder other stuff before seeing the sale that tipped me over the line.

I feel either slighted or embarrassed... I am not quite sure which. Maybe a bit of both?

It's a post on Beyond, so it's less than useless.

Anker soundcore lineup is the budget option and they score decently at rtings. Available on amazon.
Sony and Bose are also good options.

I originally purchased the bose QC45 from costco for $400. Great reviews and, but couldn't get over the price. Returned them and bought the Anker Q45's for $150 on sale off Amazon. No ragrets.

Was there a big difference in sound quality?

Sony XM4's are still my favorite headphones to date; I find they are more comfy than the bose or apple ones.

probably a bit, ya. Nothing I could say was worth the price difference, at least for my use case.

The Anker over-ears have very good sound quality. Rtings has dome instrumented testing that I would trust a lot more than any subjective opinion.
I listen to podcasts anyway, so it's no biggie for me.

Thanks for this. Interesting sound comparison. My main need is for travel and blocking out external sound so I can sleep.
I need to replace my Sennheisers at some point.

So been using the Apple AirPods Max for a couple days now and I have to say they are plenty comfortable and no issues with fit. The noise cancelling aspect is the best I have ever experienced but I can't say I am an aficionado of such things. Same for the sound... It is stellar to my ears. Build quality wise they are what you would expect from Apple. They feel tough as nails.

So far I am pleased... Apple life forever apparently lol
