That is what likely spurred this move. Most fast food employees in the US have been pushed into signing these. These people are not who should be required to sign a non-compete. They are at the bottom of the pyramid, easy to coerce at time of signing, and easy to scare into staying at a job they hate, because they have to. It is a move to not stop competition in the sales space, but to stop competition in the employee retention space, as companies struggle to get and retain low level employees.

In Canada, these would be unenforceable. Consideration for non-competes here usually comes in the form of dividends, or capital gains on voting share sales. Without those, good luck. Even with them, good luck, but those are your best bet.
