It's definitely a different process. Courts have rules metis are for all purposes of the law an "indian" but the same rights haven't been provided yet.

For anyone metis the biggest benefit they could see would be the dental/health coverage. Or the possible tax exemptions for business that full status Indians own and can take advantage of.
My bad then, I saw they were both recognized and presumed that extended the same benefits. I did edit my post at the top.

Should be fun to learn a bit more of your family history. Did you say your grandpa is full status or he's metis?
My grandpa is full status yea. I've always been interested but like I said, I don't have much connection to my family.

If he's full status why is your mom going through with things to get a metis card instead of full status? I know theres always lots of complications, but using myself as an example. My wife's metis but our kids have their full status because I am.

Sorry I guess I can reiterate and explain. my grandpa is 100% native, but has never gotten a status card and never wants to.

My mom had to speak with her half sister about it all and she has her metis card, so this is where it all stems from. I have very little info right now.

Ah gotcha. Makes perfect sense. My brothers kid isn't registered as his ex refuses. Makes no sense.

Perhaps on thing to look into is finding out if your grandpa's parents were fully registered. Perhaps you can use the family tree to get treaty status instead of your metis card.

It's worth the effort if the lineage is there. One thing to note it took my kids 2 1/2 yrs to get registered. It's not a quick process once you start it.

Do the bands/ nations help out with this at all if a person has lost touch with the relative?

I know the legion can look up a deceased relatives military service records. Is there anything like that for metis or full status FN?

An old friend of mine is 100% indigenous but raised by white adoptive parents, that was the only family he ever knew. Years ago now he returned to what he knew was his birth reservation, knowing nothing of his heritage/birth family or anything else, just drove there and walked into the band office and said I think this is where I am from and they helped him from there. A couple decades later he has deep community ties and a full understanding of his heritage/identity, it was a great thing for him and helped immensely to shape who he is today. Very positive experience.
