YOUR favourite bitter beer

Anyone have a "traditional bitter" style beer they like? It comes up in literature. Was interested if anyone locally had one they liked.

Bonus points if it's locally made. But I'd settle for locally available.

I am not sure I've ever had a bitter beer other than tasting the odd hop saturated liquid shit craft breweries try to pass of as being somehow good. Is there another kind?

Yeah, there's two kinds of beer being discussed in this thread.
1 - beers that have a bitter taste, including the "hoppy nonsense".
b. "english style bitter", which is apparently different, and which I want to try.

go to Balzac brewing as mentioned, they have a proper bitter (or did.. dont see it on their menu currently, but could be that they only serve it at the brewery). Also the pizza joint next door is fucking awesome.

English Bitters are very good. I'm just drawing a blank on the ones I've tried.
Pretty similar to a Brown Ale, says me. So, like a Warthog (RiP) or maybe a Georgetown Brown from Canmore.

That bitter is Stu's (owner) baby, I would be shocked if he let them take it off the menu.
A) it's delicious.
B) it's delicious.

That said I haven't been in the brewery for ~1month.

.John Smith's Extra Smooth is a legend in the beer world, John Smith's is a classic, clean Yorkshire bitter, with a distinct smooth and creamy texture. Distinct cereal character with elements of toffee and biscuit.

So I had to try it.


Very mild, smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Not even a little of the flavour that I would call "bitter". I don't know why they call it that. This is a nitro beer. Apparently John Smith makes a version that is carbonated instead. I'll see if I can find that. I would have taken a photo when the pint was full but the host at my accommodations came over to chat about life and travel.

The Tennants is for after.
