Default Calgary Flames MEGA THREAD 2024-2025 Edition

Andrew Mangiapane was traded to the Washington Capitals from the Calgary Flames on Thursday. In exchange for the 28-year-old forward, the Flames received a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft which originally belonged to the Colorado Avalanche.

Anything is possible. I would hope the only thing we collect is younger players or draft picks. Don't see the point of paying assets for one year of marner. Unless it's to flip him at deadline.

If we expend assets to get a good player on a short contract I'll lose my fucking mind.

Backlund and Coleman next, that line was great...but ya, time to move on, everyone from that era is going to be gone.

Let's see what magic they do to get Tij...it's really no secret him and Jerome want him here.

Ras& Kadri to Marner was a pipe dream.
That was a what if scenario some reporter started.
Same as Marner to Uttah rumor which ran wild last Friday.

The draft should be interesting. Who will they pick at #9? Will they trade up or down with their two first rounder? Will Anderson, Coleman be moved?

"The best way I can describe Parekh is he's a “rover” or “offenceman” (which isn't actually a word or a position, but it's the best I can come up with for a combination forward/defenceman). He's a power-play quarterback, play driver and risk taker. A comparable is Erik Karlsson on projection.
    aight that's exciting

For comparables in the NHL, Matvei Gridin has a similar game to Mike Hoffman: a power play threat with a lethal shot, passable skating, and o-zone potential.
Aight I guess Hoffman is decent
I just know Hoffman’s wife had a restraining order filed against her by EK65’s wife for harassment.

I don't hate the moves Conny is making so far, looks like he managed to convince ol Murray Edwards that rebuilding is the way! Great draft and Sharky at 5 years is reasonable for a young guy who wants to be here, has NHL experience, and the cap is going up. I also love the Mantha and Lomberg pick up too- short contracts that can be flipped for assets if needed but can also contribute here if kept. The only head scratcher was the Jake Bean contract. That seems like a favour move.

WTF is going on with Kylington, all this talk about loyalty etc but his agent came out and said he wanted to test free agency and twitter (that is always right and never spreads misinformation) says his side is staying pretty quite and not communicating with Conny much.

The Flames bent over backwards for a guy that wasn't able to even show up to the rink. Now the guy wants to test free agency. OK, that's technically his right but holy shit dude, it's not a great look.

Oh well, I'll get a lot of other organizations consider him a risky asset. Let's see what he gets. Nice knowing you Oliver.

Appears Jyoti got us taxpayers 4 squared in this arena deal.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/com...front_cost_of/

Under the old deal, taxpayers paid half and got most of the money back. Under the new deal, taxpayers double the overall money we put in, now pay 70% of long-term cost, and get no money back.

Are you sure you didn't get 4 squared there? The argument from that post is that the ticket tax and other revenue ($245m revenue over 35 years on $290m up front contribution) means they get most of their money back, on an interest free loan, getting 85% of their money "back".

Meanwhile in the new deal, Flames are contributing 356m. 40m up front, 316m paid as lease payments that total $708m which equates to a 5.5% interest loan. Not really a straight comparison when he's ignoring interest paid.

If you want to do a fair comparison on the new deal using the same comparison as the old deal with raw numbers discounting interest, the city is contributing $853m up front, and CSEC is paying $748m over 35 years, paying back 88% of city contribution.

Politicians are great at misinformation. End of the day, all the negativity towards arena costs ignores the fact that if a sports team isn't a partner and get a sweet deal, the city would end up paying 100% of whatever it costs for an arena/event center unless we want to be in a city with no venue for large events/concerts.

edit - that 708m contribution by CSEC is where the new ticket tax is buried. $17m a year (with 1% hike annually) breaks down to $7m CSEC contribution and $10m 9.5% ticket tax. Forcing CSEC to pay fixed amount eliminates city risk as well if nobody buys overpriced tickets. Farkas completely ignored that, probably on purpose. Guy's def working on his comeback campaign.

If I have more time tonight I'll try and do a full comparison between old and new deal.
