Check you air filter before you pay for anyone to come down.
Sure, but it probably still needs to be serviced. It's a few years old and hasn't been looked at.
It'll run all day no problem, but seems to trip without fail at 11pm and 1am.

That's really weird. Do you have a neighbor who doesn't like the noise?

Not as far as I'm aware, since they also have A/C. It's specifically the breaker on my panel in my basement, for the compressor. Not sure why that would trip if it's the filter or something else in the furnace (which runs the fan at full speed all night trying to cool the house).

Could be the start capacitor on the A/C compressor motor is weak, definitely worth a service call if you don't just want to throw parts at it.

That's what someone else was telling me. I'm like 80% sure at this point that's what it is, because it seems to hit target temp, shut off, and then blow the breaker when it tries to start again.

This is the place I went to: https://www.wrenchesautomotive.ca

Great bunch of guys there. Only place that could vacuum out the system. Fixed my leak and converted me to r134. It's maybe 10% less cooling than r12 (can't see my breath anymore) but more than adequate for Calgary summers even in the 30s. Wasn't expensive either, something like $300.
Wow, this was super helpful, thank you for the referral. I want to get the 6.9 filled and sorted for AC.

Np. I seriously spent a month calling every shop till I found these guys. Lots of shops got back to me and can’t do shit. This place their phone system went down for some reason for a week and I ended up driving there to see if they could do it. Almost missed out.

Yeah I'm no A/C pro but that sounds like a capacitor issue and worth throwing a $20 part at before you start paying pros the big bucks.

Back onto the original strategy question...

I am closing all the vents in the basement and closing the basement door. I'm opening all the vents upstairs. And closing several of the vents in the main floor where the only T-stat/sensor lives.
This should force more of the cold air upstairs and let it mix before natural convection settles it back down to the main floor while keeping the basement from becoming an ice house.
As long as there's still good airflow and low resistance (using cheapo filter), we should maximize cooling in the hottest area without freezing the coils.
Also leaving fan on constant for most days to improve mixing and equilibrium.

I set the temp to max 23.5 during most of the day, drop it to 22 after work and drop to 20 in late evening. It seems to be going good, so far.

Are you turning off fresh air intake due to heat/smoke or leaving that on? Normally I leave it on 20min/hour but I've turned it off last couple of days.

I haven't turned that off. I'm not sure how frequently mine cycles on... But it seems like worth leaving on to avoid the buildup of stinky vag smell. (From tHaCo's mom).

Do you guys mean the active venyiallation fan, or the passive fresh air intake to your ducting, or the passive intake for your furnace combustion air? I have all three. Never use the first, leave the second closed, third does its thing as needed.

Referring to the HRV, mine has econo/vent/20min/off for options.

I don't have hrv, so I never mean hrv. Other people probably do and did.
