    Default Electricity usage

I'm trying to determine wtf is causing my electricity bill to be so high. The month before (no ac installed) I had electric usage to be 1000kwh in a month. The next month was over double at 2090kwh. 10 days of this was ac but could it really be using that much electricity?

I have an electronic hot water tank and heated floors in the basement (not electric) but haven't had it turn on much.

Anyone ever do a breaker test?

    1000 isn't crazy, 2000 does seem high.

If by "breaker test" you mean turn off all the breakers and see if the meter is still turning, then yeah that's worth doing.
If it was me, I'd have my heated floors all the way off 24h/day in the summer.

Highest I've hit is 600 in March. But was probably welding.

There are no vents in the basement, legal suite requirements so it's the only source of heat. It's water based but the heater is electric. When getting it set up they said cost to lay it is much more but much less expensive than electric

Why would you get an electric water heater?

Fwiw I live in a reasonably big house, we aren’t overly energy conscious (my 4/6 year olds leave lights on all the time), use our central ac for like 6 months of the year, and I haven’t broken 1000kwh over the last 12 mo.

Honestly, not sure why an electronic was picked. I'm thinking of switching to a hybrid electric as it uses a heat pump making it use less electricity.

They are quite entertaining. Sometimes, some threads should remain as a thought in his head

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I installed one of these a few months ago:

    https://shop.emporiaenergy.com/

You're able to monitor individual circuit usage. Both real time and cumulative. Really easy to navigate app.

I have 2 super high efficiency AC/ Heat pumps and ECM motor furnaces. 2nd floor furnace has 2 zones. Since installing the monitor on May 30, Cumulative energy consumption is as follows:
    2nd floor furnace: 154kWh. 2nd Floor heat pump/ AC: 371kWh.
    Main floor/basement furnace: 191kWh. Main floor heat pump/AC: 278kWh.

I set and forget my AC at 20.5- 21.

2nd floor furnace has 2 zones.

My cross over point for Heat pump is 8C. So it will only run in heating mode when outside temp is greater than 8C. So there is not much energy consumption that can be attributed to the Heat pump.

My furnaces circulate air in the zones about 40 mins each hour regardless of cooling of heating demand.

So in 1.5 months I have used 994kWh. My all in cost of electricity is like $0.18/kwh.

So running ac for me in my house is $120 per month over past 1.5 months. Not a huge sample size, will be interesting to see what average cost is over june - end of september.

Interestingly my fridge used 360kwh in the same time period. This is about 3-4 times what a new one should consume. Time for a new fridge I guess.
Got new dryer and it is surprisingly low at 78kWh over same period of time.

Post pics of your hot water setup and In floor heat pipes in utility room.
Surely someone here can identify what is causing the kWh usage.

Don't tell me you have a fast charge tesla in your garage though.

This is pretty cool tech, but is spending $500 + to find out where $10 here or there is going missing the forest for the trees?

I think my electrician would string me up by my nuts if I did that to my panel.

Better choice would be a smart panel that integrates all that, but that’s more work and more money.

I think it was about $250 or so and I installed myself. Your point is valid.

The real reason I did this was to get a baseline of actual energy consumption over the course of the year for individual circuits/ appliances so I can accurately spec and build out energy generation and storage for an off grid property.
