Jumper on Pontiac fuel pump relay???

I am leasing a '93 Pontiac Grand Prix and I am responsible for all repairs, I have had it for three months and it has broken down three times. The second last time it was the fuel pump which I replaced myself and that pump went twelve hours after I installed it, I couldn't stand to drop the fuel tank twice in one week so I took it to a garage to be replaced, so far it is working ok. Strange thing though there is a small piece of wire jumpering from a live source to the fuel pump relay, it has been there since I got the car. My question is: why would you bypass a pump relay and what effect would this have on the fuel system? Could this jackass installed piece of wire be causing the failure of multiple fuel pumps?

Sounds like the fuel pump relay may have gone bad and someone jumped it in order to get the fuel pump to operate "temporarily". Does the pump run with the key off? Battery go dead? Or does the pump run with the key on only? In any event, you should replace the relay, get rid of the jumper wire, and re-test the system. I belive that the fuel pump relay gets it power via the ECM. If the ECM isn't powering up the relay circuit, it may have to be replaced. A good G.M. tech out there should know the answer.
