Default Norway more EV than Gasoline

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx25ljxpygeo

"Of the 2.8 million private cars registered there, 754,303 are now all-electric, compared with 753,905 that run on petrol, according to new figures from the Norwegian Road Federation. The Nordic country of 5.5 million people is aiming to become the first nation to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars - by 2025"

So what’s the deal with the remaining 1.3m cars? Hybrids? That seems like a huge number.

Pretty sure diesel and hybrids. Noone did hydrogen, but maybe some propane. Semi-trucks still haven't made the switch.

Right. Kinda stupid and misleading that they’d separate out diesel lol.

They paid all of those EV subsidies with oil money.

I mean good for them, at least their government has the brainpower to know they have an in-demand resources and actually sell the damn thing.

Using resource revenue for a wealth fund is so hot right now.

I spent a couple of months in the Arctic Circle of Norway this Summer and enjoyed watching people waiting at the few charging stations they have. Most people drove ICE vehicles - many of whom have as a second vehicle in addition to their electrics (which, from an environmental perspective, defeats the entire pollution savings of the electric).

It was interesting hearing how things actually work in Norway. It's held out by North Americans as some Socialist Utopia but the reality is that there's a ton of corruption, people get rich off Government contracts, most people live basic lives, and the only reason the system works at all is from oil money and a small population.

That said, it reminded me a lot of the Canada I grew up in (where I was in the North) and I plan to return and perhaps even take an ownership interest in the Lodge I was helping out at.

It worked for Norway because VAT on cars is like 25% and BEV skips it. Everybody switched.

Now VAT is back on BEVs over 500k nok which means it'll be a boon for Chinese BEVs that can continuously be under that bar.

They are doing this transition right but they have way more ammo than any typical low tax western countries.

What I found amazing is that they didn't really need that much of a grid upgrade. Realistically all you have to do is give a 3 cent per kwh incentive to charge at home at level 2 between midnight and 7 am. Of which most EVs will be charged to 80% from zero.

Depending on size of nation, not many people actually use L3 unless they are crossing borders. A L2 topup at work or meal break seems to suffice for many.
