Default Living in an RV on the streets

I'm sure we've discussed this before, and it's a common in several industrial areas including Moraine road NE beside beyonds favourite gas station.

Now the city want to "move them on" to somewhere unspecified.

Last month, the residents were given a temporary exemption from the city that they believed would allow them to stay on Moraine Road N.E. until suitable alternative arrangements can be found.

But they say this week, city officials handed them permits that expire Nov. 21.
What do you folks think? What's the balance between allowing low income people some level of dignity and shelter security, and the desire of businesses and society to control the streets and "protect" people from risky housing situations? I feel tremendous sympathy for people who are trying thier best to stay connected to society, hold down a job, and have had to be creative about keeping housing cost low. There aren't many reasonable options for people like this.

Many of these RV's have been converted to wood heat. That's pretty risky, and against any applicable safety code.

Whatcha say? Anecdotes and opinions welcome.

I remember driving by there during the UFA Gas experiment and seeing almost a full cord of wood stacked against a fence nearby one of them.

I though as well that that can be legal...But as long as they can be moved I guess.

What code would apply to a wood stove in an RV ?

I mean as far as I’m concerned they have 2 choices.

Follow the rules of the city they want to live in.

Move to somewhere that has rules more amenable with their lifestyle.

I don’t see how these people should have any more right to break rules than anyone else.

City streets aren’t a trailer park. A trailer park is the appropriate place for these people to live. That might mean paying lot fees, welcome to life.

Seriously. This ain’t an affordability issue. This is a group of people who don’t want to follow rules issue.

If you can setup tents anywhere you want when homeless why can't the rv bums do the same?

I wonder if a verification check of their registration & insurance would provide a quick resolution to pretty much all of them being towed? I can almost guarantee that none of them are insured for full time living accommodation.

Yea but that’s civil between them and their insurance company. Nothing enforceable.

Registration maybe but I’m guessing they have that in order.

Try getting pulled over without valid insurance and let me know how long before a tow truck shows up.

Edit - I see what you mean, the part about the vehicles not being insured as living accommodations. We get phone calls from time to time asking about commercial insurance and while it's never happened on a recreational vehicle like a motorhome, there's nothing stopping the authorities from calling, asking, and verifying the policy would be void.

It’s the getting pulled over part where cops have more power over insurance.

I’m guessing these shitboxes don’t move much.

There's laws to deal with tents just like there's laws to deal with rvs. If your going to let the tent encampments slide then how can you Crack down on people living in rvs?

Enforce the laws equally for both.

Enforcing existing laws is very important in all aspects of society.
