So many parallels to what we have here. From what I've learnt from family, Cali doesn't like forest management. NIMBYs love their beautiful forests, so it's political suicide to do any of it, hence government cut forest management budgets and sat there. It's the same story out in BC where forests is just a massive fuel sink ready to ignite with no budget to do anything about it and people up in arms over anything that ruins nature. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. On the insurance side, the companies tried to get Cali to do forest management for years with no luck, so all they could do is raise rates. What does Cali do? Put a limit on premium raises just like we did for auto insurance here. That's why Insurance companies pulled out, funny enough just like our auto insurance.
Difference in California is that they have the FAIR plan, which is a much more expensive insurance product to cover the gaps of leaving companies, but with the most bare minimum of coverage. People flocked to that, number of people on FAIR plan doubled in size in the last year. Now they're liable for about $30b of exposure for this fire alone with only $700m in the bank.
Stupid feel good policies don't work, but we'll never learn and do the same thing over and over again.

Can we crank up lumber tariffs for when they're ready to rebuild or is that heartless/useless?
They already did that for themselves, don't need our help. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If anything, their lumber industry is probably happy as a clam right now given housing built has been all time low due to high rates.

I don't know that its the best idea to rebuild using flammable lumber. Then again, even the richest Californian might not be able to afford steel.
That being said, we could put a 100% extra tariff on lumber on top of whatever exhorbitant price it will be soon enough.

"In 2023, two giant insurers, State Farm and Allstate, announced that they would stop writing new policies for various forms of property insurance in California. State Farm said the move came in response to inflation and “rapidly growing catastrophe exposure."
Imagine paying State Farm for fire insurance for 30 years, only to have State farm insurance deny all monies and leave California last year because of risk. Literally you can not throw money at an insurance company - they do not want it.
