    World Superbike

Bikes on the track again for official 2025 testing at Jerez.

Missing at the test were 2024 champion Toprak Razgatlioglu, recovering from injury, Iker Lecuona, also recovering from injury, and rookie Zaqhwan Zaidi.

Lots of new things this season. Last year BMW benefitted from WSBK's concessions system. Bikes need to be homologated with road-going versions, but manufacturers in the bottom end of the championship standings can use non-homologated parts in an attempt to balance performance across the field. This year, BMW has come out with a new frame on the M1000RR, which is not the same as the frame they used last year. Further to that, it sounds like some of the RPM restrictions given to Ducati have been removed, so I'd expect Razgatliolgu and BMW won't steamroll everyone like they did last year.

In addition to that, BMW is down from 4 bikes to 2, as MGM Bonovo Racing changes from 2 BMWs last year to 1 Ducati this year. Scott Redding was very vocal in previous years that the reason he wasn't winning every race was because the Ducati was such a better bike than the BMW (which it was) and that factory Ducati rider Alvaro Bautista was so light that a heavy rider like himself couldn't keep up unless ballast was added to counteract that difference (which they did). Redding still couldn't keep up with either Bautista or Nicolo Bulega, or Razgatlioglu. Now Redding finds himself on a Ducati so maybe this year we'll find out what's what.

The other big change is that Provec Racing, the team that ran Kawasaki's factory effort as Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK, has made a switch to the new Bimota. Riders Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani made the move with the team and now run under the team name Bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team. The bike is a Kawasaki engine in a Bimota frame, and is a winner just on looks.

Kawasaki still has a factory effort, although it's just one bike now, with Garrett Gerloff on it after being sprung loose from MGM Bonovo Racing. The team, a Kawasaki customer team known as Kawasaki Puccetti Racing, is now known as Kawasaki World SBK Team. Gerloff has taken to the new bike, but I think it's getting to be a pretty old bike and there's a ceiling on what it can do. There must be if the official team switched to a new, unknown bike.

Gone for 2025 are Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Adam Norrodin and Bradley Ray. I don't know where Rinaldi and Norrodin went. Ray is going back to British Superbike. Too bad, I thought Ray was doing quite well on a Yamaha. The rookies this year are Ryan Vickers, who comes from British Superbike and will be taking Rinaldi's spot at Motocorsa Racing, Yari Montella, promoted by Barni Spark Racing from World Supersport for a 2-bike effort this season, and the aforementioned Zaqhwan Zaidi, taking Norrodin's place at PETRONAS MIE Honda Racing. There will be one more test session at Portimao before the WSBK season starts February 21 at Phillip Island.

    More testing highlights.

Recap: Toprak Razgatlioglu is fastest. The Ducatis are fast. Nicolo Bulega is faster than Alvaro Bautista still. Bimota is still fast. Kawasaki isn't bad. Honda isn't either. Yamaha is getting slightly better.

Three more weeks until the season gets underway. I think BMW is going to have their hands full fighting off all those Ducatis. Bimota will be a dark horse I think, and Yamaha is too far away to be a threat for wins in dry races.

    MotoGP

Testing is underway for MotoGP this week at Sepang. Lots of new things since the end of last season. Jorge Martin moved over to Aprilia, and his old team, Prima Pramac Racing, switched from Ducati to Yamaha. Marc Marquez is on a factory Ducati. Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira are on the new Pramac Yamahas to help develop the bike. This year's rookies are Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini Ducati), Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia) and Somkiat Chantra (LCR Honda). And the biggest story of the offseason is KTM trying not to go broke.

Anybody following anything to do with motorcycling in the last few months have probably heard about KTM being something like 3 billion Euros in debt, laying off employees and missing payroll for the rest, and having to pull out of MotoGP. The bankers say the MotoGP team will have to fold if KTM is to stay afloat, and KTM says they're in fine shape and have no issues paying for racing with all the money they're saving by not paying employees or creditors. I think the real truth is the rumor that development of the GP bike will slow or stop. Not much has been said about it recently so we'll see I guess.

These highlight videos will be blocked here, you'll have to watch them on Youtube.

Day 1 was a bad one for Aprilia. Martin had a big crash (in the video above) that looks bad, then really looks bad. He broke bones in his hand and foot and will undergo surgery for repairs. I'd suspect this means he'll miss the Thailand test next week. And Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez also broke bones in his hand and foot, and will probably also mean missing next week's test. Fabio Di Giannantonio was the third rider to suffer injuries, out with a broken collarbone after trying to pull a wheelie after the session was over. He'll miss next week's test too.

Day 2 seems to show optimism for Yamaha and Honda, which will be good.

Final day of testing at Sepang.

Ducati is fastest, followed by Yamaha. Honda kind of looks alright. KTM and Aprilia are going to have tough starts to the season I think.

WorldSBK - Australian Round, Phillip Island

This year starts like last year with Nicolo Bulega (Ducati) winning race 1. Bulega has led every practice session and qualified on the pole so everyone will have their hands full trying to keep up. Toprak Razgatliolgu (BMW) was 2nd and really looks to be struggling with the bike after missing so much preseason testing due to injuries and crashes. I think BMW is going to have a tough time this year with only 2 bikes rather than the 4 they had last year. But Phillip Island is a different track than most of the others they race on, so who knows. But the Ducatis all look really good. Alvaro Bautista (Ducati) was 3rd, Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) 4th and Scott Redding (Ducati) 5th. Top Yamaha was Andrea Locatelli in 7th, top Bimota was Alex Lowes in 8th, top Honda was Xavi Vierge in 11th and the only Kawasaki in the field, Garrett Gerloff, DNF'd with bike problems.

Jonathan Rea (Yamaha) is out for this round and the next round with a boot full of broken foot bones after a crash in practice. And Iker Lecuona (Honda) crashed in qualifying I think, or maybe FP3, and will miss this round.

I've got a real bad feeling about Tarran Mackenzie (Honda) this year. I don't think the Honda is a bad bike and he's a good rider but that team he's on just sucks. Losing 2.75 seconds a lap to Bulega for 20 laps is painful. He's better than having to put up with that. And his teammate, Zaqhwan Zaidi, missed all of preseason testing due to visa issues, so this weekend was his first time on the bike and he ended up not qualifying for being too slow. It's not like it's a surprise when and where testing is going to be, you've got to figure that shit out.

I really like every WSBK livery. I don't really think there's a bad one in the bunch.

WorldSBK - Australian Round, Phillip Island

In WSBK, qualifying sets the starting grid for race 1 and the Superpole race. Then the Superpole race sets the first 3 rows of the starting grid for race 2. Row 4 back is set by qualifying times. Nicolo Bulega (Ducati) continued kicking the shit out of everyone, winning the Superpole race. Ducati swept the top 5 with Andrea Iannone, Danilo Petrucci, Scott Redding and Sam Lowes. Toprak Razgatlioglu (BMW) seemed to be caught by a gust of wind or something on lap 1 and ran off at Miller's corner. Alvaro Bautista (Ducati) was either caught by the same thing, or had to take evasive action and ran off as well. Both rejoined the race, but Bautista later crashed. Andrea Locatelli was the top Yamaha in 6th, Alex Lowes top bimota in 7th, Xavi Vierge top Honda in 9th and Razgatlioglu was top BMW in 13th. Razgatlioglu has a hole to dig himself out of now, starting 10th in race 2.

Race 2 is in about an hour but I'm going to bed.

WorldSBK - Australian Round, Phillip Island

Another win for Nicolo Bulega (Ducati). Good final race for Alvaro Bautista (Ducati) to finish 2nd, after starting 11th. Andrea Iannone (Ducati) was 3rd, Scott Redding (Ducati) was 4th and Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) was 5th. Top Yamaha was Andrea Locatelli in 7th, top bimota was Alex Lowes in 8th, top Honda was Xavi Vierge in 11th and another tough race for BMW with Michael van der Mark in 14th and Toprak Razgatliolgu retiring with a bike problem.

I don't know that Ducati is going to be as dominant as it seems since Phillip Island is a very flowing track, and the rest on the calendar are more stop and go. But with 8 on the grid there'll be a lot of them for the others to pass.

    MotoGP Teams (1/3)

Finally got all the liveries in, just in time for the first race of the season. Gresini Racing got a new title sponsor in scammy online betting company legitimate news site BK8 News, and Trackhouse came out with a new Gulf livery. Unfortunately Trackhouse's NASCAR roots are showing and this will only be a temporary livery, and they will have a few different ones throughout the season.

MotoGP - PT Grand Prix of Thailand

First sprint race of the season. No Jorge Martin, he was injured in testing and will miss this round and the next in Argentina. Lorenzo Savadori is riding in his place. Fabio Di Giannantonio was also injured in testing and missed all of it, so he'll need some time to get up to speed with the new GP25. Marc Marquez makes his factory Ducati debut and seems to be almost unanimously the favorite for the championship. KTM's ongoing bankruptcy drama and inability to sort out rear chatter has hindered their progress in testing. Yamaha is up to 4 bikes now with Prima Pramac Racing switching from Ducati last year. And 3 rookies - Ai Ogura, Fermin Aldeguer and Somkiat Chantra - will make their first starts this weekend.

Marc Marquez (Ducati) started on pole, followed by brother Alex Marquez (Ducati). Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) started 3rd after going the long way through qualifying, after a series of misfortunes made him have to go through Q1. There were only a handful of passes at the front as Marc and Alex gapped the field. Marc led it all, Alex finished 2nd, Bagnaia was 3rd, rookie Ai Ogura (Aprilia) was 4th and Franco Morbidelli (Ducati) was 5th. Jack Miller (Yamaha) qualified 4th, which is awesome for both Miller and Yamaha, but crashed out on lap 7. Top KTM was Pedro Acosta in 6th, top Yamaha was Fabio Quartararo in 7th and top Honda was Joan Mir in 9th.

MotoGP - PT Grand Prix of Thailand

Another pretty convincing win for Marc Marquez (Ducati). Another maybe a little surprising 2nd place for Alex Marquez (Ducati). Another 3rd place for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati). Franco Morbidelli (Ducati) was 4th and Ai Ogura (Aprilia) was 5th. If this weekend is any indication of how things are going to go this season, Marc Marquez is going to run away with the championship. Good for Alex too but this is a track that suits him well. I think he's probably faster than people think though. Johann Zarco was top Honda in 7th, Brad Binder top KTM in 8th and Jack Miller top Yamaha in 11th.
