    Thanks!

I'm too lazy to put any effort into this, so I'll just wait until I can just go buy one.
It's very cool - commendable IMO - that you plan on building PC with your son as a project. I have very fond memories of my father teaching me on the Commodore PET (my uncle was a Western Canadian distributor for Commodore back when the Pet, Vic20, and C64 were instrumental in beginning the home PC thing), all the way up to the IBM XT/AT clones before I left home. Anyhow, nurturing more blood in the PC master race is a very good thing, I hope you proceed with your son.

Building = good times. Only reason I'm not building this one myself is that without a local store to return DOA components, I want my system to run for 48 hrs and have some tests run on it to ensure I avoid issues I had with my last build a short time ago. Asus MB blew after less than 24 hours, it was a giant PITA to diagnose and then RMA/etc and then rebuild again. Hard pass on that, as it was 2 weeks+ on the turnaround to get a new MB.

    any idea of when shipping?

I wonder if I should just order one and have it shipped to my place in arizona
Not sure, nothing was indicated and I just made it for pickup at dalhousie.
It just shows up as "Preorder: Item will be available on release date "

I was interested but it just doesn't look like much of an uplift on the 4090. I think I'm just going to save my money this gen

5080s have left a lot of meat on the table, as they overclock like a mofo. I haven't gotten mine yet, so we'll see if all the reviews are legit so far (no reason to think they aren't), but most are getting 15% at least in terms of pure FPS performance out of the 5080 without even pushing them to the max. So that will help out the 5080 at least a "bit" in terms of how little their increase is over the last generation. Considering there are 5090 Asus TUF cards priced at 2899, that's really not that much more than the typical 4090 prices, most of the cheaper $2300 4090 cards were out of stock for not just months but years, and the ones that came into stock were usually the 2400+ ones. So $300-500 or so more for the 5090 isn't THAT bad vs it's performance increase, which I agree, isn't going to blow anybody's hair back. Especially mine, I've been bald since 1998.

Yea but I already have a 4090 and waterblock haha. It would be a lot of money for not very much more performance. Is that CAD? $2900CAD for a 5090?

Yes that's CAD, 2899 is the lowest priced Gigabyte 5090 on most sites I've checked. Asus has one, albeit with a "discount" priced similarly now.

Agreed re the 4090. Having lent (which will end up being "donated") one 4090 system to a nephew for school/work/etc, I'm left with 2 systems ATM set up for general use/gaming, one is a 14600k/4090 which overclocks well for both GPU/CPU (just air on the GPU, haven't done h20 on a GPU in a long time), and an older 3090 GPU/10800k that was needing an upgrade, hence the 9800x3d/5080 which MemEx just started assembling today. The monitors I bought dropped $200 in price over the weekend so MemEx is crediting me back a good chunk of $ as well, bonus.

Anyhow, 4090/h20 block - I wouldn't feel compelled to upgrade to the 5090 either really. The new connector position for the cables is a nice new feature with the 50 series among other things, and if I was buying "new" or didn't have a 4090/h20 already, the $2899 5090 isn't that unattractive in terms of price IMO compared to 4090s, at least IMO.

I'd like to get a FE 5080 but I think that's a pipe dream. USA had something like 300 units for the whole country on release day?

Around $1K USD on ebay. Deepseek revived the interest on these due to 24GB VRAM.

So MemX right now is selling the 5090s at “market adjusted price”. They are not honouring the price when you placed the backorder.

Tell them you'll buy the extended warranty. It'll appear before your very eyes.
