Default Area 27 - Camaro Academy

(my first post in nearly a decade!)

    Has anyone ever done this?
    How was it?
    Would you do it again?
Any tips on getting the most out of it?

    https://area27.ca/camaroacademy

I've always wanted to get out onto this track ever since it opened. I'm thinking about doing a 1-day experience in June.

Your skill level is higher than they will let you drive the cars. This is really more for very novice drivers.

I'm kind of just wanting to play around and get a chance to drive the track.

I don't think I'm currently at the skill level to drive the cars to the limit anyway.

I've been out of the autocross scene since 2017. So I'm probably pretty rusty.

It’s such a fun track, any chance you get to drive it is worth it I think.

I spent two full days by myself with two of my cars on the track and it was the best time I’ve ever had with my cars.

If you’re ok with basically being nannied and told what to do, with no free rein over pace or control it will be a good way to drive the track. It’s like driving an exotic car in Vegas but with more laps.

    I've heard it's pretty amazing.

It would be nice to have more freedom. It's there any alternatives that come to mind?

$800 for the day is on the low side unless they over sub and doesn't give everyone enough seat time.

I may be thru that part of the hood in June. That may be an interesting day to participate.

There used to be ways to get on with clubs/shops that would organize a track day and fill spots with paying members of the public. No idea if that’s still a thing, but it’s probably your best bet. Bring your own car obviously.

This is the way to go but a Macan isn’t going to suffice.

That being said my father did a BMW event there and they were also using X5MC and X3MC for lapping lol.

Generally agree, but for arguments sake, I’d rather drive a Macan with a bit of freedom over a Camaro with an overbearing babysitter.

Correct, but I don’t think any clubs will allow a Macan on track due to insurance regs. It’s different when it’s a factory backed event with instructors etc.

The difference in price between your own car and the Camaro is about 1000$. The cost of insurance, tires, brakes and gas alone is more than that.

Besides, i can't imagine the Macan is all that great on the track. It's just a daily driver for me.

They also have manual transmissions, which is huge for me

The "babysitter" aspect is the key, here. It's better to be able to push your own vehicle to the limit because they won't let you risk pushing theirs.

You aren't supposed to bang the babysitter.

They don’t babysit you that much, if they realize you’re competent they usually let you push the cars hard.

Make sure to check out the Kart track next door too. They have 2 stroke Rotax racing karts as well.

This was going to be my first response, but he said he wants to experience the big track.

I’ve heard the kart experience was great there.

I had no idea they had a Kart track as well. That's pretty awesome. I'll have to try and do that sometime as well!

That's good to hear, thanks. I'm going to go ahead and book the full day expressive with a Camaro. I'm getting pretty excited the more I look into it.
