Default The inevitable 2004 Federal Election Thread

The campaigns have begun, and candidates are now running their TV ads.

Who do you think you'll vote for?

Although I haven't done any of my research yet, I personally don't like either of the frontrunners. The Liberals haven't been doing a great job, but the Conservative party seems to have been a sloppy merge just to gain enough power to get into office.

That being said, I think I will vote Conservative, not because I think that they will win, but they should have enough power to keep Paul Martin in check.

i dont like paul martin, so ill probably go conservative. Also, i think that a good house cleaning is in order to get rid of some corrupt officials. though im not saying the cons. will be better in the long run, but they will be best in the short run.

The long run requires a socially liberal, econimically conservative, hardliner type who has canada's best intrest in mind, rather than his own. These people do exist and do pop up occasionally, we just have to be on the lookout.

You are much more optimistic than I in that regard. It seems that the only reason to get into Canadian Politics is so you can help your friends out at the expense of the citizens...

I hate all of the parties, we all know that anyone of them is going to rip us off as soon as they get the chance, so I'm going to cast a protest vote and vote for one of the joke parties.

i think alot of people are not going to be voting "for" anyone, but rather "against" someone...

for example the guy right above this post, not voting "for" conservatives, but rather "agianst" liberals.

Liberal - only because of their foreign policy. I've been a long time Conservative, but it's going to be hard as i've not yet heard much about their stance on the rest of the world.

It's not like our votes can really do anything even if we did vote.

Exactly, something needs to be done about the Canadian democracy system so that the votes of the western people actually count.

In the last federal election only 23% of 18-25 year olds voted. However they seem to be the majority when complaining about the government.

I would think that adding the other 77% to the voter pool would probably make a difference.

And when you figure out how to do that you'll be a very rich man!

Just look at communist russia, 100% voter turnout!

I would say that the current Conservative party is all of these things. However the left-wing parties (NDP, Green and even the Grits) tend to scare the uneducated voters into believing that dismantling unions, reforming welfare and creating a multitier health system is a bad thing.

Who are the people that have "popped-up" in the past?

Hitler was chosen as the leader of his German Workers party by a single vote....

Vote, its important. And its a luxury that a lot of people do not have in the world, which is why we see so many problems everywhere.

That is a good idea on the surface, but it often forces people to make choices that are uneducated and sometimes surprising. Someone who cares not to vote will usually just check off a name and absolve themselves of breaking the law. I dunno, i'd rather have them not vote, than to check off the first name they see.

I hope Julia Turnbul (sp?) gets in just to piss off the liberals. Remember what happened when Kim Cambell ran? Thats exactly what is going to happen to the liberals this time around. We need a change, the problem is I don't think either conservatives or new democrats have a strong enough leader to become PM. Should make for interresting elections.
You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

You've got a really good point there. Perhaps then it should be illegal for someone to publically state their opinion of the current government if they didnt vote then.

There's been numerious discussions here on beyond (and tons of places on the net) regarding Canada's flawed vote system, thus my comment about how our votes are useless.

    PS - I voted. Didn't do shit .

Bah, the problem with voting is that no matter who you vote for, the government always gets in

Yep, against martin, but the conservatives talk yesterday about miltary, supporting Americans etc.... gotta go NDP and their "socialist" option...

Green Party all the way!! What ever happened to the Rhinoceros Party from the 80's?

Even though Paul Martin is not Jean, I still cannot vote for a party that has fuct Canadians as badly as they have.
