Default rusted support area for driver door hinge

My sons recently acquired 1988 Honda Accord needs repair
to driver door upper hinge support area, due to years of water
    leakage coming from sunroof.

Do I need to get radical on this repair ?? - I have not taken the
door off yet, so can only see that the upper hinge is flexing with
what looks to be pure rust, only the lower hinge is strong and
    I believe much less affected.

Do I use my own metal repair parts or maybe sections from
junk yard car? What I really need to know is - how far away
might the best area be to weld to and where?

    Any advice would be welcome.

Without seeing the extent it is hard to judge. It is a double structure and may very well be possible to cut off the rusted outside hinge pillar and weld in a replacement. I am assuming the rust is on the hinge pillar and not on the door side?
