Torque Wrench Questions

Right.... For a 1/2" Torque wrench @ CT it's about $100 I think...
You could try Princess Auto and also the home reno stores, but the MasterCraft stuff has a lifetime replacement warranty

$80-$100 ?? Ouch. Hmm.. maybe I can buy a relatively good used one. Should I stay away from a certain brand? What's good and what's not?

Go with a guarranteed one, like the Craftsman. Also suggest you get the 'click' type as opposed to the needle type - much more accurate.

you must make sure to de torque the torque wrench after using every time cause if you don't it messes it up.

I don't know, in another forum I was on, they said that cheap ones are fine. I have a cheap 20 dollar one and it seems realtively accurate.

I think you can get decent ones at sears for cheap. Mine's from Walmart

i bouhgt mine from Primcess auto it works great and i only paid about 30 bucks for it, the only thing with these TQ wrenches is that you have tomaintain them frequntly, like gtting them calibrated every once n a while or you find yourself shearing bolts or undertorqing them

I asked this last week in another thread, and the response I would be better off renting one whenever I needed it (I only need them twice a year for changing my rims)...so??

I might just go buy a 30-40 dollar one though.

In your case, for only torquing up lugs, the cheapest ones will do a good enough job. Before I got a Tq wrench, I'd just feel to where I thought it was about 90 ft-lbs and I have never had a problem with loose lugs, they'd always stay just as nice and snug as when I put em on, feel the same as when I use an accurate Tq wrench. When I start taking apart engine parts though, I think I'll buy a more accurate wrench, as you can't tell that well with things around 0-60 ft-lbs

just watch your levels on a torque wrench...they are only accurate within the mid 80% range.

Eg: 0-100ftlbs will be accurate at 10-90ftlbs. Just keep that in mind so you might want one with a scale of 0-125 since you only need like 95ftlbs on your car.

i find its too much a pain in the ass to borrow tools. better to buy one and be done with it. you don't know when you will need it.

Watch for special! CT sometimes have their Professional Series (click-type) on sale. I remember they go down to $69.

A torque wrench will not have lifetime warranty. Usually one year.

Try not to buy a used one, because torque wrench needs to be re-calibrated. And read the instruction manual that comes with it, because different torque wrench has different setting. Not all torque wrench needs to be de-torque after use.

Lastly, torque your wheel lugs, don't torque guess. And no impact!!

The Canadian Tire click type are lifetime warranty - I used to work there and I have both the smaller and larger ones

Are you sure? Because I have the Profressional Series one, and it says on the manual that is has one year limited warranty.

I go check again to make sure.

just call them and give them the product number, it should be written on the side of it somewhere, should be something like "59-5342-6" or whatever, but should start with 59 and they will look it up in the computer and it will say "Lifetime Warranty" in the computer
