Default how do i clean chrome?

so weve had the chrome wheels that dont even look like chrome wheels anymore its so grimy and dull and they are the color brown. we tried to use soap and water to clean them but no luck, still the same.
I saw(on MythBusters) that Coca Cola and aluminum foil can clean chrome, does anyone know of any side effects to using that(scratches)?
Are there any better ways to clean chrome?
Once i get them back to looking the way they did before should i put some sort of protectant on them?
What should i do to keep them shiny and new looking?
    thanks

use brake cleaner to clean off all that brake dust and then mothers chrome cleaner. I use the chrome cleaner on my muffler tip and it works pretty good.

Turtlewax has this stuff - rust remover and chrome polish. Apply with an old toothbrush, let dry and then wipe/buff off. Works good on spot rust on paint too.

Autosol is the shit!! I would trying using it first. Takes years of exhaust residue off of alluminum muffler tips.

edit: get the paste not the liquid.
