The issue isn’t in the furnace. It’s how many conductors you have from your furnace to said thermostat.
There are a few different ways to solve this problem. Wyze hijacks an existing wire for constant power and pulses it to transmit the signal. The adapter then translates the pulse to signal whatever to turn on. I believe most smart thermostats have some sort of solution...including the nest products. If there is a one of situation where you don't, they make a product for that too: https://www.amazon.ca/Google-Nest-Po...28153101&psc=1

If it doesn't work without the c wire then go with this unit - https://www.amazon.ca/Emerson-Sensi-.../dp/B01NB1OB0I

I have 4 of these in my house running without C wire, takes 2 batteries which last for eternity
Thanks. I have the updated version of my basic one saved ($35 at Lowes or Amazon) just in case, but I like this option too. I'm away for the weekend so I have to have something working by tomorrow or else the wife and kids will never forgive me.

I believe adding a C-wire isn't all that difficult if you have a multimeter. Its just a 24v wire and you'll have a 24v transformer in the furnace somewhere anyway. Or it might even be just adding a ground/neutral wire since the R brings power into the device... I forget how I did it but it was beyond easy to add in my house.
You'd think. I had an electrician years ago come and add one because I got a fancy Honeywell Wifi one as a gift about 8yrs ago. So there's another wire which I think is a C coming out of the wall behind the thermostat. But that Wifi thermostat never worked properly, and as soon as the first cold snap hit, the thermostat would just constantly reboot and cycle whenever it was trying to start the furnace. Honeywell said it was the installer's fault, and the installer said it was a faulty thermostat, so I got nowhere and it went into a box in a drawer ever since. I went back to my original thermostat and it continued to work flawlessly up to a couple days ago.

But something I might like to revisit later, because it's one of those unanswered questions that I just worked around instead.

Yeah I actually saw the Nest power connector as I was doing the compatibility check. That may be an option next week if it doesn't work out of the box tonight, but like I said above, I need to have SOMETHING working for the weekend. Then I'll decide whether to go with just a basic, do the Nest connector, or do the Sensi as above.

Honeywell thermostats from that era are notorious for being total pieces of junk. My simple Honeywell died after two years.

If you have a voltmeter it's easy enough to test the wire.

Our 20yr old builder-grade thermostat went on the fritz a couple days ago, so decided we'll give this one a try. We don't have a C cable though (at least not a reliable one), so apparently it's about 85% chance this will work. Supposed to arrive today so we'll see.

Is that the poor man’s Google Nest? I have one in my garage with a C wire and the batteries last maybe 3 months. Shouldn’t need batteries at all, real effing annoying.

Basically. It's still a Nest but not the $300 "learning" one. Programming, with WIFI, but that's about it. Just finished installing it, seems to be working fine. Ran the furnace for about 5 minutes, then ran the AC for about 5, and no reboots or anything so looks like it's sticking around.

Daddy Trudeau was good to me this year on tax refund so treated my car to some goodies. Still deciding on which exhaust to get.

Do you have AC running too?

We only have 2 wires and was use the cheaper Nest thermostat with it, but couldn't after installing AC. Installer said if we want a smart thermostat I'll need to get the Honeywell Wireless one, which was like $650 for the whole setup. We didn't feel spending that so we just ended up using a $50 basic unit with no way to automatically switch between furnace and AC.

Yeah, you really should have an extendable ladder. Provides so much more utility than a single fixed ladder. Looks like you're makin' a trip to home depot soon (don't take the Z4 though...can't fit anything in that!)

I had the honeywell wireless and didn't like it. EcoBee was much better. If there's any way you can run enough wires to your main thermostat location, ecobee allows great flexibility on where you place the wireless sensors around the home.

Nah my home has a boiler/baseboard heating setup so no AC. Was it just the lack of c wire as to why you couldn't use the old nest you had? You're looking at either getting a thermostat with optional AC plug in or battery powered, which is why I ended up with the Emerson.

    Nice. Details?

I've been waffling back and forth between getting a Z4 (considered both E85 and E89), a Boxster, or a Cayman for like the last year. Only reason I keep eliminating the Z4 is cause of the dash and its inability to fit a double DIN stereo.

It's a sports car. Enjoy the road, not the stereo. (I am biased, I can't fit a double din in the S without hacking up the dash)
