While reading the Herald today I came across this link in the letter to the editior section. It is a good history on how much trouble it is taking to replace the 'Sea King' helicopters. Personally I think it is sad that our pilots are forced to fly these antiques. Discuss.

yup, cretien cancelled an order about 10 years ago to replace the sea kings costing us, the taxpayers, 375 million dollars in penalties. yaayyyy. if i was not 8 years old at the time i would have been right pissed off.

the problem is maintenance just like your average care

30 hour maintenance for 1 hour of flying. i could be wrong, but that seems like a lot...

haha the best headline i saw was canada too replace aging sea kings with economy helicopter. The word economy doesnt set right with me. I do think 30 hrs is alot for one hour flight time. Kinda a shame.

They're getting replaced for sure this time (unless they cancel ANOTHER contract).

Too bad they won't show up until 2008.
We'll probably lose another few pilots in the meantime, in the flying deathtraps.

i still think we should have bought a bunch of Mi-24 Hind's back in 92 when they didnt cost anything. That would certainly scare the shit out of me if it was bearing down on my position! hahaha. i always thought they look hardcore.

30 hours becuase we neglected them for so long trying to save money the us and britain still use them and see them as economical

They started using them in the mid 60's dude, they are out of date and need replacing.

it is true that they use them, but you have to realize that they also have in addition to them many other helicopters. we are far too reliant on the seaking as a primary helicopter. the SH-3a seaking was used by the us navy in 1962 then later the us coastguard. 42 years later, its time to move on. the americans have. they dont give primary duty to the seaking like we do.
