I keep hearing from some people that you can get your PST back when you visit other provinces if you live in Alberta (since we have no PST). Is this true? I've searched the net but only came up with tax rebates for visitors to Canada.

My understanding too was that you had to be a non-resident of Canada, and that it was the GST that was rebated-but this is a long time ago so I don't know if things have changed since then or if I'm even remembering correctly
i heard soemthign about showing an alberta ID and they will waive the pst at the time of purchase, but i may be wrong.
EDIT

Well if I can get PST waived or paid back that will make my visits to Toronto a lot more worthwhile
EDIT: I remember seeing an info folder in a tourist info booth about tax rebating - maybe check at one of those if its close by?
I have never got my PST back anytime i purchased something in a different province.
But i know when you order something online from business outside of alberta, you only pay GST and the PST gets waived. So maybe they might waive it if you show alberta ID.
I lived in ONT for 3 years and was never able to get any of the money back. I just made sure that any big purchases I made wer in Alberta.
Looking for a new VW? How about a used vehicle? We are Central Albertas #1 source for pre-owned vehicles

No they wont. THe only way to avoid paying PST when you are visitiing another province is to have the seller ship that item outside of the province back to Alberta for you. Otherwise, you are stuck paying it no matter what kind of ID you have/etc.
I went to BC a couple of years ago, and we showed them our drivers license at time of purchase, and they waived the tax. Same goes with visting the United States.. however, Im thinking your supposed to do that at customs or something.
I bought a watch in Winnipeg from Eatons and showed them my Alberta drivers license and they didnt charge me PST.
It might have something to do with the fact that Eatons (back then) was a national company.
As far as I know, only select business can allow to wave the local PST if the buyer is from Alberta. Long time ago, I remember it was hit or miss when we shopped in Vancouver. Below the Belt on Robson did it, you had to show them your AB Drivers and the wrote all that info down on a sheet...blah blah blah, you save 7%

I inquired about this for Ontario purchases and the criteria was something like this:Originally posted by CuteAsianAngel

- Must submit an application to the provincial gov't with receipts.
- Total must be at least $500 before taxes (iirc).
- Each receipt must be >= $50.
- Receipts must be dated within the time frame of your trip.
- Only goods qualify. You can't claim food or services.
This was a long time ago and I don't know what the requirements are now.
Best bet is to call a travel agent because I'm sure they field this type of question daily.

threw them out cuz I didn't read this post...
I'm just gonna pretend that this was a long time ago so it's not applicable and that it would have been too much hassle neways..
ahhhh
How about when people buy something at a chain store that's outside of Alberta, and then return it in Alberta. Do they get their PST back?
Success is the ultimate revenge.
Yes, you do. I bought shoes at Pegabo at Metrotown. They gave me the PST back when I returned them here.Originally posted by abyss

What 1-Bar said, it's hit and miss when it comes to shopping for clothes, shoes etc.
Some stores I had to pay PST in Van and some stores I had to State tax in Seattle.
But major purchases like my 323I and S2K were PST exempt in Van! hehe
