ok, say you "magically" lost a gear (4th to be presice) and you couldnt get it fixed immediatly, is it better to run higher in a lower gear to get a little closer to 5th or lower in a higher gear and shift sooner from 3rd? healthier for car?

when cut open, the rambutan unfortunately fails miserably to deviate from its outwardly testicular appearance, revealing an inside that looks for all the world exactly how you'd expect the contents of a scrotum to look.
just go from 3rd to 5th, I skip 4th all the time. infact, i go from 2nd to 5th all the time, its nice having so much torque.
well i am skipping 4th, but for engine longevity (?) would it be better to over rev or under rev to make up the lost gear ? i drive a lada so i kinda dont have much hp and torque

every car is different. just drive it so that it doesnt make scary noises.
Longevity? If you want long life of your vehicle FIX THE PROBLEMS before they get worse.Originally posted by Rockski

Are you skipping 4th gear to save gas or do you have a problem with that gear?
both overrev and underrev are bad but in your situation underrev would be slightly desirable

Lol oh shit, that's why you never teach someone who wants to learn stick on your car.
My buddy lost 3rd in his escort a week after he bought it. Of course he does not want to pay to fix it. After drving that way for years he doesn;t know any differently. Rev it up some more in 2nd and put it in fourth.
When he drives my car he still doesn't use 3rd, crazy bastard.
In my truck which as no guts (58hp/93ftlbs diesel) I shift to the next gear as soon as possible to save fuel... as long as it's not starting to bog down and sputter it's not going to damage much, if anything, accually with high gas prices alot of "So called" experts have been recomending this lately to cut down on your fuel cost. then again these people also are getting paid to come up with everyway to save a drop but belive it or not it works. you just have to lay on the pedle once in a while to blow out any build up.
I'd be more worried about (it's a long shot... but possible) the shards of gear and metal in the pan restricting the trans filter and starving your lub. I wouldn't stress making your engine work a little harder change the tranny fluid and filter!
