Default GF Robbed in Thailand, anything i can do?

My GF is visiting Vietnam and Thailand, well she left her wallet and money in the hotel that she was staying in (in thailand) only to come back and find that (i will assume the maid) is stolen. the hotel is refusing to help...

all her money, bank cards, id and stuff were in that wallet..

is there anything i can do?
i was thinking of calling the Canadian Embassy there but im not sure if that will do anything?

    Opinions will be greatly appreciated..

    and ps, dont flame her

Did they take her passport? If so, she is fucked without the embassy's help.

Hotel or hostel? International hotels can be pretty accountable if you contact their head office. Hostels...well you can threaten to trash them hard on the hostelling websites and lonelyplanet.

In the future, she should really look into a money belt.

I've always wondered how you prove citizenship if you don't have ID. Do they make you sing the anthem and name a bunch of capital cities?

I just figure it would be helpful to have the canadian embassy behind you because they are pulling that BS.

Honestly I have never had that happen before so I dont know what I would do

See, there is a reason these countries stay poor. They need to protect their tourists in order to sustain (and improve) their tourism industry.

Best of luck to your gf!

Since she hasn't lost her passport, I don't think there is much the Canadian embassy can or will do for her other than tell her to keep her valuables secure in the future.

She could also file a police report, the police might lean on the hotel to do something, as they may be under instruction to protect tourists (to protect the tourism industry as a whole). If the local management of the hotel isn't doing anything, contact corporate head office (or maybe even the Canadian one) if it is an international chain.

Like everyone is saying, cancel the cards, and she'll have to get someone to wire her money via Western Union. Does she still have her plane ticket?

Yeah unfortunately she's S.O.L. on this one. Too bad, that's a shit deal but good lesson learned for her I guess.

Not trying to flame her at all, but who the hell leaves all their valuables in a hotel room in Asia? Especially is there isn't even a safe? Did she get there on a turnip truck? At least she's got you here to help get new dollars sent her way.

dude...i dont kno wat u can do to recover wat has happened

but for ur future sake, dont leave valuables (including passports) in ur hotel, if ur in asia... especially china, and cheaper hotels

Even in china, with the safes, and all, its still easy to open it if they wanted to, or take the entire safe OUT if they had to

I'm not trying to flame here.. but i think for the most part shes SOL, in terms of getting her stuff back. Even in Canada, if something of yours is stolen, quite often its hard to prove who did it, and chances of getting your stuff back is slim.

Yeah but at least in Canada, if something was stolen out of a locked (I presume) hotel room by (most likely) the cleaning staff, something would be done in terms of compensation by the hotel and the police probably would get involved by way of a filing a report.

That being said, I agree with the consensus that she really should not have left valuables lying around in a foreign hotel...
