    Default Vibrating Steering Wheel

I have a 02' Mitsubishi Mirage. At speeds above 60 mph the steering wheel will slowly begin to vibrate more and more, little by little until it has my hands are shaking, then it will slow dissipate and eventually stop. A few moments later it will start vibrating again. In other words, there’s a pattern to the vibration and the intensities go up and down.

Now, a few months ago it was doing this really badly so I went and got my tires balanced and rotated. It didn’t fix the problem immediately, but a few days after the vibrating had stopped. That is, until today. Because the balancing didn’t stop the problem immediately, I’m not sure it that’s what fixed the problem or not.

Any ideas? Should I just go back and get my tires balances again?

    Thanks!

It could be your drive shafts, sometimes you can get a bad one thats out of balance & you will feel a vibration through your steering a certain speeds, if thats the case you would have to replace the shaft

You failed to mention you curbed one of your tires. Take it to the shop.

You say that as though you witnessed it. Wouldn't it make more sense to ask me if I had "curbed a tire"? But anyway, how would "curbing" a tire cause vibrations that come, go away for a few months, and then come back?

perhaps a weight fell off your wheel and it took that long to fall off....i curbed my rim a while ago hahah, can you say cracked rim?

has anything happend that may have started the vibrating to come back? worst case scenario take it to a wheel and tire place...

does it pull to either side at all?

    Check these things:
1 All drive shafts and axles for malformation
2 All wheels for balance, cracks damage etc
3 All tires for treadwear irregularity
    4 Steering component mal formation

Im with noodles, you should go get the wheels balanced again and see if it was the fact that a weight fell off and is starting to shake again. ??

Check all of the above and check for separated tire. Separated or out of round tires frequently cause low speed tire vibrations, as do bad drive shafts especially on accelaration.

tires could be bad or your brakes could be rubbing too...rotors could be bad also...its not all about the wheels could be something to do with the brakes too

    good luck fixing the problem

i am willing to bet the tires are out of balance...used to work for
fastech tire in edmonton here and it is most likely a tire related problem. when it comes in and out at certain speeds its most likely a tire prob. as far as it disappering for a bit...if you had some caked mud it could have done the trick to counter balance for a bit.

God, I'm an idiot. For a second I forgot everyone on here uses the metric system. When numbers without units are thrown around it can get confusing.

Anyway, I drove the car on the highway today and it doesn't seem to be vibrating anymore. If it comes back I'll take it to get the tires balanced again.

    Thanks everyone for you help!
