Default Businessman Thinks He Can Weaken Ivan

This guy sounds like a genius:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A South Florida businessman says he's going to try to weaken Hurricane Ivan by flying a Boeing 747 into the edge of the hurricane and dumping thousands of pounds of an absorbent material into the storm.

Peter Cordani of Jupiter plans to try to knock the storm down by one or two categories by dropping tons of powder that absorbs 3,000 to 4,000 times its weight.

Cordani is chief operating officer of Dyn-O-Mat, a company that sells environmental absorbent products such as mats for mechanics. He believes his product, S-K-1000, would cause a shearing action and a 15-degree cooling of the storm.

Cordani has been working on his plan for five years. He has assembled a team of experts, including two former astronauts -- moonwalker Edgar Mitchell and Scott Mac Leod, who tested the lunar module.

Cordani is reportedly in contact talks to lease a 747 tanker from Evergreen Aviation in McMinnville, Ore.

I'm wondering what kind of company would lease this man a plane?

I though they 'seeded' lightning clouds to ease those storms so I can see this being feasible. Whether he ends up doing it or not he's gotten a lot of free publicity!

They do that here, its some mixture to help prevent monster hail. A small Alberta thunderstorm is a little different than flying into a class 2 hurricane the size of Florida.

Actually if he pulls it of even slightly.... he's a genious. Can you imagine the amount of publicity this will create for his company. A good image goes a long way in business.

What a fucking dope. This guy deserves NO props, and if the plane crashes and burns him to death, then it's too good. This jackass seems to have covered every angle, except for the DISASTROUS environmental consequence.
Great. He's going to stop the storm instead of have it end naturally. As well as wipe a few species' right off the coast

I guess it just goes to show you that even a millionaire backed by a team of astro experts, can form the dumbest fucking group of people on earth. Better bring an umbrella you shit-heads. You know, just in case you have to bail out of the plane and float safely to the ground.

LOL, I see a potential Darwin Award shaping up here.....This sort of reminds me of the guy with that huge armour suit that is supposed to save you from a bear attack and getting hit by a truck etc....

If you ever have flown over a minor weather disturbance in a large plane...you know how turbulant it can be, I couldnt imagine the ensueing armaggedon that would take place in a Cat5 nahahahah.

I'm not saying it will work but what kind of environmental consequences were you thinking of? How would it wipe a few species off the coast?

Maybe he thinks it'll work cuz hes from "Jupiter"?

AS far as I was aware, the outside edge is just a consequenc of what is happening in the "eye" (rapid heat exchange).

My solution would be to let off a nuke right at the center near the apex

I was being a little sarcastic, so I threw in some hyperbole's....
I honestly don't have a clue what impact on the environment would be if it actually happened, but I can offer up some guesses:

    - animals eating the stuff and dying
    - animals eating it and living, biomagnifying it through the food chain
    - saturating already fragile ecosystems
    - burying wetlands and swamps

I mean come on. The East coast is already at a breaking point as far as wildlife habit goes. Human development can't even grow at it's regular pace anymore over there, because the systems in place are so fragile. There can be no way that dumping millions of tonnes of anything can be good! Especially not God-damn floor dry!
