Default noise from automatic transmission lever

My 1987 T-Bird is making a noise that seems to come from the base of the automatic transmission lever (located next to the steering wheel). It sounds like the noise is produced by air coming out from the base. I can make the noise augment or diminish by moving the lever. It's louder when the engine is cold. Is it a transmission problem?
Any help very much appreciated, thanks.
