you will need a network interface card in the laptop (PCMCIA or USB), and either a hub or a router, some CAT5 Cable and you are set. or you can go wireless...no CAT5 cable required, used the laptop at any desk chair or position in the home or on the patio...
EDIT:
Remember, if you go with the hub, you will have to call shaw and have them gouge you 10 bucks a month for an additional IP address. Buy the router, far better for security and it will pay for its self over time guarenteed.
