Default cheap good food with sustinence

im looking for something to fill my gut, and money is really tight since i moved up to edmonton, ive been going on protien shake, rice, KD, Rolled oats with jam, picked whatever i can find, mostly carrots, some campbells soup, and occasionaly a beer that gets left here for carbs... they were all alright at the start but now im starting to actualy want some real food. i think its been about 4 months now...

how much is real tight? Like how much are you looking to spend a meal? Buffets and Subway are always a good way to go. Get your sub with everything on it!
Some people are funny. They spend money they don't have, to buy things they don't need, to impress people they don't like.

canned and frozen tuna is dirt cheap and provides a lot of nutrition. the only downside is that the tuna available for consumption regularly exceeds government recommendations for tolerable daily intake of mercury.

haha are u fucking kidding? i bet u live at home with mammy and pappy.

eating out is damn expensive, subway is a total ripoff, and buffets barely even exist.

Here's something cheap - nutritious and tasty - Fried spaghetti.

Boil up a bunch of spaghetti, drain and put it in a bowl and refrigerate it.

Saute a chopped onion, set aside, brown a pound of ground beef, drain, add the onions back in - add salt and pepper and garlic powder to your liking. Add some oyster sauce if you have it and mix it all around then add your pasta sauce. Add a few cheap vegetables (mushrooms are always good but finely chopped carrots, celery and the like are good choices too).

Put it in a sealable container in the fridge and whenever you're ready to eat - heat a frying pan up, dump in some sauce and a few handfuls of spaghetti noodles and you're good to go with a meal thats quick, cheap and tastes good and is nutritious. Throw some (real) parmesan on top (it costs a wee bit more but its worth it ).

This works good for lunches too if you have access to a microwave.

Ya I do live at home, But I have to buy all my own meals. I don't eat breakfast, then at work I buy lunch, then supper I don't eat much for that anyways. And there are plenty of buffets out here in Airdrie, and pretty cheap too.

the only beffets in airdrie are chineese, plus, if im too poor to eat much other then rolled oats i really cant afford to eat out, plus i need to eat enought to make me feel "full" for a solid 8 hours while im outside working, with manual labor, you cant survive off of subway once a day, that would hold me over till first coffee break (2 hours)

You should try to get some meat into your diet if possible.

Potatoes are great. So are beans. Many ways to prepare them.

You could always dump 2-3-4 large, peeled and boiled russet potatoes into a frying pan with some oil, mix in 1/4 to 1/2 can to spam and add an egg.

But the most nourishing (and in quantity) things have been mentioned.

Pasta, again, many ways to prepare. Buy a large bottle of plain tomato sauce (or tomatoes w/ can of tomato paste, whichever is cheaper), some ground beef. Brown the meat, mix the sauce in. Let it cool and put it back in the bottle (or a large tupperware). Good for at least a month.

Buy in bulk, if at all possible. Non perishables. MUCH cheaper in the end.

I feel your pain man, I just started living on my own this year that I have to pay for my own food( iinstead of going to the Caf). and Subway/Wendy's seems alot more expnesive now! $8 a meal!? no way! haha

so now i usually just cook a shit load of pasta for a few days, cook dumplings for a few days, then rice w/ vegies for a few days.

    Pasta:
    Box of pasta- $2
Bottle of sauce - $4 ( dont knwo how to cook)
    Ground beef - $5
    Green peper/tomato- $3

    Total- $14 that last ~ 3-4 meals. so thats ~ $3-4/meal

    Dumplings:
    Bag of chinese dumpling- $5 ~ 20-25
Can of soup ( or MSG if you want to go even cheaper) ~$1
    Vegies- $3
    vinegar (sp?) - $2

Total- $10 that last ~ 2-3 meals. so avg $3-5/ meal

    Rice + wings + vegies:
    Rice - $2
    2lbs wings - $ 6
    Shake and bake - $2
    Vegies - $3

    Total $13 that last ~ 2-3 meals. so avg $ 4-6/meal
