Hey I was wandering what most you guys do when you want to pass someone in a standard if say your going 60km/h in 4th gear.

Would you just stay in 4th gear, or would you down shift to third to pass them?

depends 100% on the car and motor. and how fast you want to pass him. way to many variables to answer that.

way to many variables, what type of car , what speed they are going, are they still accelerating, etc

if its like deerfoot or mcleod and im goin 60 and i wanna pass a person goin like 80-100, fuck yes im down shifting (why would i be goin 60 in the first place?)

also if i only had a short distance to pass, yes id downshift, otherwise... no

but wouldnt that be really bad for your engine? Downshifting at 60km/h into third and flooring it?

if im cruising at 60 then im in 5th. if im cruising, then its a slow and mellow road. in which case id just stay in 5th to pass.

if i were driving a jbody id downshift to 2nd.

Why dont you mention what kind of car youre talking about? It all depends on gearing, engine displacement, wether it has forced infuction or not etc

downshift to pass...that car would have no torque in 4th gear at that speed. Of course it all depends how quickly you want to pass him. You could just floor it and slowly watch the rpms and speed build up until you had some power

uhhh... not really down shifting is pretty natural, its not like my revs would be at 6000 in 4th and then when i downshift they jump up to 7000, thats fuckin stupid.

in 4th goin 60 they're like at 3000 so theyd jumpt o like 4000ish, thats still fairly safe in really any car

edit: and exactally what redlyne said

When I was driving back from Vancouver I hit a lot of slow bastards on the roads back...at 60km/hr in a standard, my car is at 7300rpm in first, and about 4000 rpm in second...powerband really kicks in at about 3500 in my car, so that worked out well. Was out and around him and back in the lane in about 3-4 seconds. Car tops out at 102 in second gear.

If its a 2 lane highway and you want pass someone and there is no one in the on coming lane for miles then stay in 5th and pass. If there is lots of traffic then down shift and GUN it. It im on a really busy highway with on coming traffic im gonna hit 3rd or 4th gear depending on my current speed and gun it. YOu should know at what speed each gear in your car redlines at. My car is as follows
    1st 50km
    2nd 90km
    3rd 135km
and so on so i know at what speeds what gears i have as options!
    hope this helps

ok so if I'm going 60km/h in fourth gear and I want to make a quick pass, I should drop it in 3rd gear and hit the gas? If so how long should I leave it in 3rd gear?

I usually shift down for some high rev action.

As long as you desire. Do whatever you think is necessary.

and it wont mess up my engine?

Also in my dads crappy Sentra I notice I get like no torque in 4th or 5th gear going at 100km/h. When I want to pass someone at that speed it takes so long for me to pass them, should I down shift to 3rd or is that not smart?

Accelerating in 3rd gear from 100 km/h won't do any harm to the engine, provided you upshift when you reach a reasonable speed.
