    Default woofers

would it be okay to put some woofers in the factory speaker compartments of a car... i mean, i know its not correct to do so because they are usually put in a perfectly fine tuned boxes, but would it be really bad? will the speakers be damaged and sound crappy? thanks

No it would not be okay. Woofers need the backpressure of a box to sound any good, while speaker components do not.

You're right. Listen to this guy. His explanation is obviously more in depth.

I know a friend that put some in the rear panels of his 240, they were JL W7's I think & they did sound like shit, without a proper enclosure don't expect them to sound very good.

if you want to put them in your rear deck look for "infinite baffle" subs (IB) that are diesgned to work without enclosures. They are hard to come by now, since JL Audio cancelled their IB subs. You can look for elemental Designs flat-coned O series subs, they are amazing and very loud and designed to work without a box (although running something IB cuts its output in half at least). You would be better off just putting subs in the trunk in a box because IB subs don't get loud at all, they are for SQ only, I have never seen a 10" factory speaker hole (or an 8") and you would have those subs jacked so fast it wouldn't even be funny.

While this is true, i've yet to hear a good sounding free-air sub that is reasonably priced. Most subs are either way too big to fit in a small confines of a speaker designated area, or are simply too expensive.

Factor out the cost of the very expensive subs, and the very small number of free air subs that actually sound good, and you are left better off finding something else to suit your needs.
