I watched that on the news last night, they said because it was in Toronto that it was fightable. Something about Provincial Legislation stating that certain major cities in Ontario had to have both languages. I doubt fighting it here would do any good, but then again you never know...
Another thing that I was asking is when I was down in Montreal, all signs were posted in French, with no English in sight. I don't mind being a bilingual country, but when these morons aren't conforming to our regualtions, it should almost be considered something like a traitor (not that harsh, but some kind of fine for being unpatriotic) Too bad we can't go back 135 years and make it just one language..
I wonder how much it's going to cost to replace all those signs. Dammit...I wish Quebec seperated when they had the chance

Homer: It doesnt mean anything, just like RAMALAMA DING DONG or GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!
Don't get me started on Quebec. They are just a bunch of cry babies who uses seperation to hold other 10 provinces hostage.
I say good ridence. Let see how their economy will hold when anglos leaves in drove.
The only good thing come out of Quebec are the sexy french speaking hookers and strippers.
if i see french signs added to our signs ill spaypaint them..i so wish quebec would seperate..french is usless!!

haha the redneck factor is hue in this thread. As expensive as Quebec is to keep in Canada it's nice to have some diversity and culture in our country. Montreal is an awesome city, I'd hate to one day need a passport to go visit it. Canada started in Quebec what a horrible thing it would be to give up our history

The stop sign: this octagonal shaped sign is part of a North American-wide accepted sign system. Whether you speak French or not, or English or not, won't make any difference. What would you fight it on? On what basis? Not clear? Besides, there's already case law that says "stop signs" are unique and therefore common knowledge for drivers. Something you would have had to know on your driver exam.
As for the French side of things, I know that the Alberta Language Act permits a person to communicate orally in court, but it is silent as to anything else. My guess is that the previous poster is right: it is a municipal matter.

Some people's ignorance amazes me!
The fact is that there is a huge French speaking population in Canada. Canada was discovered by a French voyageur. The earliest institutions were all conducted in French, and Canada's first colonies were French, not English.
Besides that, not having French would rob us of any type of culture we have that distinguishes us from Americans.
Like it or not, French is here to stay.

quebec is substantailly smarter than most other provinces. they threatened to leave and even tried to leave, and it scared the shit out of ottawa. now quebec gets the most per capita in federal spending then any other province. this same course of action could be taken by any province, with similar results i imagine. thats why we are all stupid.
