Question I hear a beep in my bimmer...

I have recently bought a 92 318i and was wondering if anyone can help me with this. While i'm driving, every once in a while, i hear a beep sound. No lights come on (check engine) or anything. I just makes a couple of beeps. It's not the beem from my clock either. I don't have the manual to that car to check.
Does anyone have any idea what the beep is for?

thank you, I appreciate the help.

Door pin possibly??? Sometimes if the door pin is loose or not making contact properly the beep will occur if rattled around by driving conditions.

If the temperature falls below +3 degrees it beeps to inform you that the roads might be icy and no there is no way to turn it off.

Thats crazy, couldn't you relocate the temp sensor to somewhere that will never reach 3 degrees?

That is actually not a bad idea ...

However for calgary, it is always around 3 degree ...

Anyway, you will get use to ! I think Audi and other nice german cars, have the same feature !

Good call on the cold temp sensor! I totaly forgot about those things. A relocation could definitly solve the prob.

I don't think its a problem it is a nice feature to have. The temp sensor is in the front bumper so it is a hassle to move it. If you do move it you won't have accurate temp readings in the summer either.

MB's don't have that feature at all. My car has the outside temp guage right under the speedo. Does the 92 318 have an outside temp guage?

Should, I remember all E30's having them... Did the E36 have the same feature?

As already mentioned if you relocated the temp sensor you will not get an accurate temp reading. So if you don't care about the temp and you don't want to hear the low temp notification beep, save yourself the effort of relocating it and just unplug the temp sensor.

I would guess also a memo function from the on board comp. i.e a limit spees has been set or somthing. usually beside the time it will show sound waves like a alarm clock.

my car did the beep thing, its a 92, but the mounting point in the bumper sucks so much eventually the sensor just peaces itself, and it always reads -37

They probably took the function out after the E30. I know the older models had it, pretty sure my buddies 84 had it.

My '94 318 had it and my '98 328 has it. All BMW's with a temperature sensor has the feature. The temperature display will blink as well when it beeps.

thank you all for the info
I'll have to pay attention to details next time it does it.
As long as its not a beep indicating a problem, i'm fine with it

^^^ the temp readout blinks about three times and the beep is the same as the open door beep

I think it might be part of the cold weather package. b/c at 3 degrees the heated mirrors also activate with the cold weather pkg
