Get the VIN for the car, and take it to a registry to see if its been written off, or if there are any liens on the car.

Get the car mechanically inspected. Check with the AMA, if you have a membership - and if you don't, get one. They used to do inspections themselves, but I think they don't anymore. They can tell you who does the inspections for them now. Not a guarantee that you will get a trouble free car, but will give you a heads up on what to expect in possible upcoming repairs/maintenace required. Can also give you some bargaining power, too.
