I doubt there is a law that you gotta put it in a box and vent it, hit up a google search or call Transportation canada.
but it would be a smart idea to use a box and vent it. those expensive ass optima batteries are sealed so i doubt you'd have to vent them

optimas are so over rated.......if you want a good battery look in the aviation industry and you can find batteries with half the weight and the same power if not more...also transport canada wouldn't know...im looking for someone with an IHRA regulation book!

The short answer: maybe (depends how fast you run)

In all likely hood a vented box is required (even if your using a gell type battery). But things are changing for the new season - you may have to sit on the fence and see what comes out for the 2005 regulations of SS.

It needs to comply with IHRA (or just SCCA??) rules and regs for RCMP. I think it requires a min of 3/8" hold down rods, sealed and externally vented box, and a vehicle cut off switch (hooked into the battery + and + on the alternator) so the tech can shut off your car from behind, it has to be visable and easily accessable. I did this for to my car also.
Talk to Clint at mopac, he set me up with my relocation parts.

    edit: found this on stangnet

"All batteries must be securely mounted. Batteries may not be relocated into the driver or passenger comparments. Rear firewall of .024 inch steel or .032 alum (including package tray) required when battery is relocated in trunk. In lieu of rear firewall, battery may be located in a sealed .024 steel or .032 alum or NHRA approved poly box. If sealed box is used in lieu of rear firewall, box may not be used to secure battery and must be vented outside the body. Relocated battery(s) must be fastened to frame or frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8" diameter bolts. (J hooks prohibited or must have open end welded shut) Metal battery hold down straps mandatory. Strapping tape prohibited. A maximum of two automotive batteries or 150 pounds combined max weight (unless otherwise specified in class regulations) is permitted. Maximums may vary according to class requirements."
