Default What happened to hands free pumps?

None of the stations I go to have them anymore, and I don't think nthey have for a while...I remember they introduced them maybe like 7 years ago, why did they take them away?

I'm guessing people maybe left them going on the ground or something costing money and environmental damage?

Well we took them out of our gas bar due to possible electrical shock with the metal clamps. You've probably seen videos of people starting to pump, sit in there car, get out without grounding on the chassis, and ground on the metal clip, which caused a little spark, which ignited fumes etc... the odd station still has them, i think its more of company safety policy, more then a rule. People still just stick gas cap underneath it. Also, if the safety fails to clip off, then gas will keep pumping. Never seen anyone put a pump on the ground tho

There use to be a small metal clip inside the handle of the gas pumps, so that you can flip in down and it locks the handle in place, so you don't have to stand there holding it yourself. which means in -40 weather you could lock it, get it your car and wait, then it usually snaps out when your full...

I keep an old pair of gloves for refilling. Hands stay warm and don't reek of fuel when you're done.

If you have your gas cap underneath the handle, would it still snap out when it's full?

as soon as gas goes back into the nozzle the flow stops, it doesn't matter where the handle is

Exactly. Think of it this way, when you go to a station that's doesn't have the tab, you are pumping, once it is full it 'clicks' off and stops flowing even if you are still holding the lever.
I've seen a bunch of people get yelled at by gas station employees for putting there gas cap under the lever.

only happened to you once? shit, most gas bars have 500$ + a month in driveoffs. we got a report for the gas bars in calgary with the worst driveoff record, and its the safeway one off of 32nd NE i believe. they have like 1500$+ a month

they've been talkin about implementing the pay before you pump, like alot of places in the us have. so i think alot of pay at the pumps will be happening soon.

I will push my car to a different station than use a gas station that has me pay for it before I pump.

If I remember correctly I still live in Canada. I hate going to the US and having to pay before pumping.
