do these reports pretty much verify that the vehicle isn't stolen?
i'm planning on buying a civic for pretty cheap from a guy who has recently moved here from ontario. should i be worried that it's stolen?

well do you have any reason to be worried about it being stolen?
Vin checks will tell you the title on the car( whether or not it's been written off, rebuild etc) and it will tell you how many times it has been registered and by who. However, if the car was previously registered in ontario you will not be able to get an alberta registries to check for you. You'll have to contact a registries in Ontario which in my experience was kind of a pain in the ass.
i'd be more worried about the rust, than if the car is "legit"....
why the rust?Originally posted by jaysas_63

because in ontario/quebec they use alot of salt in the winter...hence why people are leary of buying used ontario cars
yup pretty much what t-im said.....now not only do u have to look for rust that is in plain site....but u also have to see if the car has been "de-easternized" i.e. if the car has had slight modifications to make it look like it isn't rusted...a lot of ppl do this when importing cars from ontario to western canada, just be weary when u buy a used car that has been winter driven in ontario, especially if it is old, and has lots of kms...all that will sum up to a rusted up piece of shit in the near future.Originally posted by import_illusion
why the rust?
or you could just not bother with it, too many potential rust related headaches..
oh and btw there is other stuff the vin can tell u....like when i was lookin to buy this 300zx, i took it to sunridge nissan (they are crazy nice ppl), and they did a vin check on the car....they found out where the car was bought (in my case it was qubec )..the vin check also told me that the car had the odometer replaced...which was also not good, needless to say i was dissapointed lol
exactly...don't buy a used car from eastern canada..thier is usually a reason why they are cheaperOriginally posted by t-im

hey hey now... don't be dumping on the east coast. At least we dont' use boulders on the roads.
But yeah, the salt thing is true. You'd swear it was a was a rust 'prohibitor' they use it that much. I once lost control not because it was icy but because I ran over a huge pile of salt as I was goin from one lane to the next.
would a 1998 with 140,000kms be considered that bad?
well its obviously been drivin in the winter with that much mileage (or just crazy hwy usage)...anyways, so its been threw alot of salt, grime, etc...if its maintained properly, might be ok, but once again like its been said, i'd be wairy about buying a car from there..Originally posted by import_illusion

yea man that plenty, think about it...6 yrs old, 140000, thats about 24,000 a yr...which means it was used quite a bit, all year round...i.e. lots of winter drivinOriginally posted by import_illusion

even if u don't see the rust, the integrity of the metal is not exactly as good as a car drivin in calgary for the same period of time, so u are more likely to see it rust up quicker
but in the end its really up to u, and how much savings u are getting...if u don't mind having rust like in the near future then get it, but if u would go insane (like i would) if ur car rusted then deffinatly don't get it.......
it's probably cheap becuase in ontario honda's are cheaper then in alberta . by almost half price!
