Default Need help formatting C drive with Windows XP...

I right click on the C drive, and click Format. But I keep on geting this message when I press the "Start" button:
"Windows cannot format this drive. Wuit any disk utilities and any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting this drive."

It tells me this even after I've closed all my other windows programs!
How can I format my drive successfully?
    Thanks for any help!

That is because you are try to format the drive that the operating system (WinXP) is using. The operating system won't erase stuff that it needs.

You have to do it in DOS. Formatting is a pretty big deal, any particular reason for doing it?

How do I get into DOS from WindowsXP though?

I know what formatting is, and what comes with it, but it needs to be done. I have way too many corrupted windows files that prevent me from watching movies, playing games, and listening to music. And thats pretty much all I do on my CPU anyways...

you should have a system restore disk that came with your computer ... just shove it in and follow the instructions carefully and you should have your computer up and running in no time.

ok if you don't have a reinstall disk, how would it help you if you formatted your hard drive???? You do realize formatting mean erasing all the data right ????

Hehe, yeah, it's been done before, no worries.
XP is crap though. I get the feeling the moron that designed it didn't include DOS....

I can't seem to find it at all...
